What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled and motivated R&D Manager 4 (Group Leader) to lead its Instrumentation and Controls (IC) Group. AOT-IC is one of five groups in AOT Division, specializing in the design, development, and deployment of instrumentation and control systems of accelerators and accelerator systems as needed for the operation and maintenance of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator, for the LANSCE Accelerator Modernization Project (LAMP), and for other Laboratory accelerator systems that are critical to the success of the Laboratory's mission objectives. Additionally, AOT-IC is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of magnet power supplies for AOT's accelerator activities. As part of the AOT Division Management team, the AOT-IC Group Leader will participate in charting the strategic vision for the Division, including defining and prioritizing current and future accelerator activities. The Group Leader will have the primary responsibility for developing and maintaining the accelerator instrumentation and the control technical capability and the magnet power supply capability needed for ongoing and future Laboratory accelerator missions, including identifying research and development areas to strengthen AOT-IC's core technologies. A particularly challenging part of the position will be to optimize the sharing of limited AOT-IC resources between LANSCE, LAMP, and other AOT activities, using the health of the overall AOT accelerator capability as the guiding metric. The AOT-IC Group Leader is additionally responsible for ensuring disciplined execution of all projects and tasks executed within the Group, with clear definitions of scope/budget/schedule, responsible leadership, and clear delineation of responsibilities between line and project. The Group Leader is also responsible for providing streamlined administrative management of the group including integrated safety management and being responsive to the needs of ALDPS and AOT management.

Key areas of current AOT-IC focus include real-time process control, motion control, high-speed data acquisition, timing & synchronization, network and server management. The group also has a machine learning/artificial intelligence team that is endeavoring to apply these new technologies to enhance accelerator control systems and a team focusing on magnet power supplies that are controlled by these systems. Maintaining and operating the LANSCE Control System is the largest part of AOT-IC's current portfolio. The LANSCE Control System is a highly complex integration of both legacy and modern technologies. It includes over 1,500 network-addressable devices, such as National Instruments cRIO controllers, Allen Bradley PLCs, and other form factors like VPX, VME, and cPCI. The system runs on a variety of platforms including Linux, VxWorks, and RTEMS, and uses the EPICS framework to manage more than 175,000 process variables.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven experience managing a team of 20+ professionals, including overseeing budgets, resource management and allocation, and driving operational discipline and excellence.
  • Extensive experience providing high-level technical leadership in instrumentation and controls, with in-depth knowledge of both hardware and software integration across complex systems.
  • Proven ability to develop and apply cutting-edge solutions in these areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technological innovation, and ensure the maintainability, scalability, and sustainability of critical systems and infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a long-term strategic vision for an organization including developing and maintaining its technical capability required for mission success.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical R&D projects, ideally in partnership with other line and program organizations.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and skills in setting priorities and assigning tasks, performance evaluation, mentoring of employees, coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and judgment, including the ability to prepare technical and budgetary proposals, strong fiscal management skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative relationships, internally across groups, across the division, within the directorate, or within the laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability in effective communication with subordinates, peers, and superiors.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in engineering and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Master's degree or higher degree in engineering relevant to accelerator engineering preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to balance, prioritize, and deliver high-quality results over multiple activities in the presence of severe funding or resource constraints.
  • Proven track record in managing system upgrade and modernization projects, with the ability to balance operational demands with the successful implementation of technological enhancements and ensuring long-term system sustainability while minimizing downtime.
  • Experience with systems such as National Instruments cRIO, Allen Bradley PLCs, Cisco network equipment, and various other hardware form factors such as VPX, VME, and cPCI. Experience with EPICS, and operating systems like Linux, VxWorks, and RTEMS.
  • Experience managing competing demands in a 24/7 operational environment, supporting both ongoing operational needs and R&D project commitments.
  • Demonstrated success in setting priorities for and leading efficient, graded implementation of safety, security and safeguards, environmental management and other core Laboratory business requirements.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
