R&D Engineering Manager - Custom Power Solutions & Engineering-to-Order (ETO)

Toshiba International Corporation is seeking a highly motivated R&D Engineering Manager to lead a talented engineering team responsible for the development of innovative power electronics, industrial control systems, and Engineering-to-Order (ETO) solutions that support multiple TIC business units.

This is a business-critical leadership role within TIC's Research, Development & Engineering (RD&E) organization, supporting custom ETO projects, Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) Marketing, Custom Adjustable Speed Drive Systems (CASD) Marketing, and Power and Automation Controls (PAC) Marketing initiatives. In addition, the team supports important internal TIC engineering functions, including the design and development of manufacturing test equipment, test stands, facility electrical infrastructure, and plant substation projects.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical leadership with business acumen, project execution expertise, and a passion for developing high-performing engineering teams. This leader will play a key role in advancing innovation, supporting strategic growth initiatives, and ensuring successful execution of complex customer-driven engineering projects.

What You'll Do

Engineering Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for product development, engineering-to-order solutions, and custom customer projects.
  • Build and maintain a high-performance engineering culture focused on innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical direction, coaching, and career development opportunities for engineers and engineering leaders.
  • Drive organizational excellence through effective talent development, succession planning, and employee engagement initiatives.

Engineering-to-Order (ETO) & Custom Solutions
  • Lead engineering efforts supporting complex customer-specific ETO solutions for:
    • Medium Voltage Drives
    • Low Voltage Drives
    • Custom Adjustable Speed Drive Systems (CASD)
    • Industrial Control Systems
    • Power and Automation Controls (PAC)
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet customer requirements, project schedules, quality expectations, and profitability objectives.
  • Provide technical oversight for custom design projects from concept through manufacturing and field deployment.
  • Support business growth initiatives through engineering innovation and customer-focused solution development.

Product Development & Innovation
  • Participate in the development and execution of technology roadmaps and product strategies.
  • Drive innovation initiatives focused on next-generation technologies, product differentiation, and competitive positioning.
  • Support the complete product lifecycle, including:
    • Product concept development
    • Design and validation
    • Product launch
    • Lifecycle management
    • Product enhancements
    • Obsolescence management
  • Collaborate with Toshiba global engineering teams and external partners to identify and implement emerging technologies.

Technical Oversight & Design Quality
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the technologies and products developed by the team.
  • Review and approve engineering designs, ensuring compliance with quality, safety, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Establish engineering best practices, design standards, and development processes.
  • Provide leadership for technical problem-solving and risk mitigation activities.
  • Ensure engineering solutions are scalable, manufacturable, maintainable, and aligned with business objectives.

Internal Engineering Projects
  • Oversee engineering activities supporting internal TIC operations, including:
    • Manufacturing test stands
    • Product validation equipment
    • Plant automation systems
    • Facility electrical upgrades
    • Power distribution projects
    • Facility substations and infrastructure improvements
  • Partner with operations, manufacturing, facilities, and maintenance teams to support strategic capital projects.

Cross-Functional Business Leadership
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Operations, Sales, and Supply Chain teams.
  • Drive alignment between engineering priorities and overall business objectives.
  • Support customer engagement activities, technical reviews, major proposals, and strategic business initiatives.
  • Develop strong relationships across TIC and Toshiba global organizations.

Financial & Operational Management
  • Manage engineering department budgets, resources, and expenditures.
  • Participate in annual budget planning and capital investment planning processes.
  • Monitor project performance, resource utilization, and engineering productivity metrics.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality.

External Collaboration & Technology Advancement
  • Support strategic partnerships with:
    • Toshiba global engineering organizations
    • Universities and research institutions
    • National laboratories
    • Industry associations
    • Standards organizations
    • Government-funded technology programs
  • Represent TIC in industry working groups and technical forums.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • 7-12 years of experience in engineering, research & development, product development, project engineering, or related technical fields.
  • 2-7 years of engineering leadership experience with responsibility for engineers, project teams, or technical organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and people leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or higher in Engineering, Engineering Management, or related technical discipline.
  • Experience leading Engineering-to-Order (ETO) projects and customer-driven custom product development.
  • Experience supporting industrial power electronics, drives, automation systems, motor controls, switchgear, or electrical distribution systems.
  • Background in Industrial Manufacturing, Project Engineering, and Project Management.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management and product development processes.
  • Familiarity with global engineering teams and multi-site development environments.
