ATI is currently looking for a Research and Development Metallurgist (or Melt Engineer) at our Millersburg, Oregon location. We're looking for someone highly motivated with a proactive mindset, has the ability to manage multiple priorities and commitments to delivering high quality, data driven results in a manufacturing environment. The Engineer takes initiative in solving complex problems and enthusiastically tackles challenges including highly uncertain situations. You will work independently as well as alongside the R&D team, operations, maintenance, and customers. In the role you'll make unique products that will end up in space, medical devices and high-performance applications. The markets we serve are just as exciting as the engineering challenges we solve and you actual get to see your work make a real impact in the world. You'll get to work in a flexible environment to meet the needs of high consequence applications; the role requires adapting to the unknown and developing solutions on the fly as problems come up and customers ask for new things. Lots of opportunity for growth into new processes and through exposure to a wide range of customers and stakeholders. This is an onsite position typically working Monday-Friday 7 AM to 4 PM. Responsibilities - Plan, schedule, formulate, and execute R&D scale melts. - Make strong decisions - the process is completely run by the Metallurgical Engineer and one operator. - Drive business development and customer service. Be responsive to customer requests (both internal and external) for material including new and novel alloys and find a way to say yes. - Support R&D management in evaluating requests, determining feasibility, and assessing whether a strong business case exists. - Drive capability developments. This includes establishing new processes that meet customer needs for downstream processing of R&D melts. Responsibility for process improvements; CI with focus on throughput speed and RFT as well as transformational changes to capability. - Lead and support raw ingredient procurement and inventory management. - Support ongoing and new R&D projects through melting material and leading internal pilot scale work. Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, engineering, or related technical field. - In lieu of a metallurgical degree, candidate should have at least 4 years experience in metallurgy / metals manufacturing. Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge of or experience working in a manufacturing plant environment. - Knowledge of melting processes (PAM, EB, ESR, VAR, small arc button melting). - Knowledge or experience in refractory metallurgy. - Project Management Training or demonstrated skills. - Basic mechanical aptitude - Python or other coding experience - Controls experience, especially PLC and real-time process controls Total Rewards ATI has a Total Rewards package to attract and retain top talent.
