Full Job Description
Quality Project Engineer

Mission Critical | Barton Malow Company | Near Philadelphia, PA | On Site, Full Time

Position Summary

Barton Malow is seeking a Quality Project Engineer for a mission critical project near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is a full-time, on-site role based at the jobsite.

This role executes the project quality program in the field: inspections, nonconformance tracking, punch list management, and the turnover documentation that proves the facility was built to specification. On a mission critical project the record is part of the deliverable. The owner does not simply accept the building, they accept the evidence that it works, and the volume of that evidence is substantial.

The Quality Project Engineer is the person who keeps that record complete and current, and who does not let an open item age quietly. This role works alongside the package Project Managers, the Superintendent, trade partners, and the commissioning team, and reports into the project quality function.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Executes inspections against the contract documents, approved submittals, and the project quality plan, documenting results consistently and on schedule.
  • Manages the inspection and test plan, coordinating hold points, third party testing, and special inspections with the trade partners, testing agencies, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Identifies, logs, and tracks nonconformances from issuance through corrective action, verification, and closure, escalating items that are not moving.
  • Manages punch list development and closeout, including area walks with the owner and design team, assignment to responsible trade partners, and verification of completion.
  • Assembles turnover packages, including inspection records, material certifications, concrete and steel testing reports, weld and coating records, operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, and as-built documentation.
  • Maintains the quality documentation record at a level of organization that withstands owner and third party audit.
  • Supports first-in-place and mockup reviews, benchmark walks, and preparatory meetings so quality expectations are set before production work begins.
  • Coordinates with the commissioning team so quality closure and commissioning readiness stay aligned, and construction issues do not surface during startup.
  • Reports quality metrics and open item status to project leadership, with clear visibility into aging items and trends by trade or area.
  • Supports root cause review on recurring issues and helps translate lessons learned into changes in the field.
  • Builds effective working relationships with the owner, design team, testing agencies, trade partners, and Barton Malow team members.

Required Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent field experience.
  • 2 to 5 years in a quality or engineering role on large-scale construction. Mission critical experience preferred.
  • Experience executing inspections, tracking nonconformances, and managing punch and closeout documentation.
  • Familiar with turnover package assembly and the volume of records these projects require.
  • Meticulous and persistent. Will chase open items to closure rather than let them age.
  • Able to read and interpret drawings and specifications well enough to inspect against them and identify a deviation with confidence.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials testing, inspection practices, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Proficiency with construction management, quality, and document control platforms, plus spreadsheets and drawing markup software.
  • Clear, direct written and verbal communication. Able to raise a quality issue with a trade partner in a firm yet fair manner and keep the relationship intact.
  • Organized under volume, keeping inspection logs, nonconformance records, and turnover documentation current without being chased.

Work Environment
  • This is an on-site position. Full-time presence at the jobsite near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is required.
  • Substantial time spent walking the work in an active construction environment, including exposure to weather, noise, elevated work areas, and uneven terrain, with required personal protective equipment.
  • Closeout and turnover phases may require extended coverage to support inspection and documentation deadlines.
