The Pursuit Team Lead for the Environmental Services Business Line supporting US West, Mountain, and Great Lakes regions provides leadership and direction for a small team of pursuit specialists while actively leading pursuit efforts in support of the business operating units business development objectives. This role ensures consistent, high-quality pursuit execution by aligning strategy, resources, and delivery across multiple opportunities across regions operating in several North America time zones. Working closely with growth teams, sector leaders, and technical leadership, the Pursuit Team Lead drives disciplined pursuit processes, develops differentiated win strategies, and supports the professional development of pursuit staff. In addition, the role partners with business and marketing leadership to align pursuit workload with team capacity, supporting prioritization and effective assignment of pursuit resources across active opportunities spanning multiple regions and time zones.
Success in this role is measured by team performance, proposal quality, improved win rates, and effective collaboration across the organization.
The role also includes working with a larger Stantec team of marketing, business development, public relations, and communications professionals to build our brand awareness and identify market opportunities for top line growth.
Your Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
• Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and mentorship to pursuit team members.
• Support onboarding, skill development, and performance feedback for pursuit professionals.
• Promote best practices in proposal strategy, content development, and pursuit management.
• Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across pursuit and marketing teams.
• Support balancing workload across the team by coordinating assignments and helping align capacity with pursuit demands across geographically distributed teams.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Pursuit Team Leads and pursuit team members across North America, working across multiple regions and time zones to support coordinated pursuit delivery.
Strategy Support & Implementation
• Implement Stantec's business development and pursuit processes on complex, strategic opportunities across the region.
• Collaborate with Regional Business Leaders, Business Development Leads, Business Center Leaders, Account Managers, Project Managers, and Operations Leadership (pursuit team) in developing distinctive value propositions and win themes that clearly differentiate Stantec.
• Collaborate with teaming partners and subconsultants to develop qualifications that will position Stantec's team for success.
• Leverage Stantec's companywide network to identify and showcase unique capabilities and resources, collaborating with the pursuit team to develop innovative solutions that address client challenges and create a distinctive competitive advantage.
• Collaborate with practitioner leadership and Pursuit Team Manager to track and review strategic opportunity pipelines, supporting prioritization, early positioning, and informed pursuit decisions.
Pursuit Planning & Execution
• Engage early in the pursuit lifecycle to develop comprehensive action plans, including due diligence, client and stakeholder analysis, competitor intelligence, win planning, and strategic teaming approaches.
• Lead and support pre-RFP qualifying activities such as client, competitor, and market research, and tracking of key client capital plans.
• Guide pursuit teams to develop and implement pursuit-specific capture plans, such as documenting due diligence in project briefs, developing win plans, conducting SWOT analyses, preparing an executive summary, preliminary go/no-go reviews, and identifying the execution team.
• Plan, organize, and direct all elements of the proposal including analyzing the client request, developing a response plan, initiating a follow up go/no go, facilitating strategy review, conducting kick-off meeting, managing and contributing to the response sections, in-progress reviews, prepare red team reviews, schedule pricing coordination, and final submission.
• Support prioritization of pursuits in coordination with leadership, considering strategic value, probability of success, and team capacity through facilitation or participation in Go/No Go meetings.
Proposal Management & Content Development
• Drive proposal management and development efforts for diverse teams to ensure compliance with client requirements, adherence to deadlines, and consistency of messaging.
• Work with pursuit team in developing innovative solutions and leverage corporate network to identify existing capabilities that respond to client challenges and create a distinctive competitive advantage.
• Create, edit, and refine existing materials and written content to effectively communicate services, capabilities and market-specific messages.
• Apply creativity in the use of graphics and visual elements to enhance proposal clarity and impact, providing direction to graphic design resources as needed.
Quality, Compliance & Knowledge Sharing
• Monitor marketing and business development pursuit spending and report significant variances.
• Ensure all pursuit documents comply with corporate branding standards and client confidentiality requirements.
• Share promotional materials, insights, and best practices with other pursuit and marketing team members to support continuous improvement.
• Contribute to visibility of pipeline activity and pursuit progress by supporting updates and sharing insights with leadership teams.
Qualifications
Capabilities and Credentials
• Experience leading large, complex pursuits and proposals is a must.
• Highly detail-oriented and organized, with exceptional prioritization and time management skills. RFP compliance is essential.
• Ability to balance competing priorities and manage multiple complex pursuits simultaneously.
• Strong ability to develop win themes and integrate them consistently throughout proposals.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and strategic problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with senior leadership, peers, and clients.
• Strong interviewing and facilitation skills.
• Confident presenter in both small and large group settings, with proficiency in presentation tools such as PowerPoint.
• Strong understanding of marketing and business development best practices within professional services.
• Self-driver with demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
• Ability to effectively communicate with senior management, supervisors, direct reports, peers, and clients, internally and externally.
• Demonstrated proficiency web-based tools and Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Co-Pilot, etc.
• Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Acrobat.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, marketing, communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Minimum of 7 years of related experience, including experience leading or mentoring a team. A/E/C industry experience preferred.
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
