Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project/Program Specialist 1 to provide specialized project and program support within a dynamic mission-focused environment. In this role, you will assist project leaders and program managers in planning, organizing, and controlling resources and processes to achieve project objectives within established scope, schedule, quality, and budget requirements.

The successful candidate will support project execution activities including work package development, cost estimating and analysis, schedule maintenance and reporting, risk management, and stakeholder communication. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical personnel across the Laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support project and program managers in planning, organizing, and controlling resources and processes to achieve project objectives.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of operational plans, work packages, and project deliverables.
  • Support cost estimating, cost analysis, budget tracking, and cost control activities.
  • Assist with schedule development, maintenance, reporting, and monitoring activities.
  • Monitor assigned project activities and provide analysis, modeling, and status reporting to project leadership.
  • Coordinate with project, program, and line management to ensure resources are available and appropriately qualified to complete assigned work.
  • Identify potential project risks and assist in developing mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and project documentation to communicate project status, issues, and recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with Laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Knowledge of project or program management principles and practices.

Education and Experience

Essential Job Functions

Safety and Security

Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. The selected candidate will maintain required safety and security training, ensure compliance with Laboratory requirements, and make safety and security an integral part of every task, including stopping work when conditions are unsafe or security could be compromised.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in an office environment and may require prolonged periods of computer use, document review, and participation in meetings.

Desired Qualifications

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 year.

Additional Details

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
