What You Will Do

The Operational Safety and Compliance Programs group (PSS-2) is seeking a highly organized, self-motivated Project Leader with a strong desire to learn. The selected candidate will support the Program Manager and serve as a key operational partner in coordinating activities between the Program Office and Line Management. This position supports PSS-2's mission to reduce operational and programmatic risk across Weapons Production missions through the assurance of proper processing, storage, containerization, control, disposition, and distribution of special nuclear materials. The role helps streamline programmatic tasking, facilitate communication, and ensure alignment between organizational priorities, workforce capacity, and customer expectations.

The Project Leader supports the execution of strategic initiatives by coordinating requests, tracking deliverables, supporting risk assessments for the Program Office, and assisting with contract paperwork and coordination activities within a dynamic mission environment. This role works closely with programmatic and line organizations to ensure requests are efficiently routed to the appropriate subject matter experts, timelines are communicated effectively, and deliverables meet customer and organizational expectations.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Support the Program Interface function by coordinating incoming requests and ensuring efficient task routing to appropriate personnel and technical resources.
  • Support PSS-2 mission objectives focused on reducing operational and programmatic risk across Weapons Production missions.
  • Assist with activities related to the proper processing, storage, containerization, control, disposition, and distribution of special nuclear materials.
  • Conduct and coordinate risk assessments for the Program Office to identify operational, programmatic, and scheduling risks and support mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate and manage contract-related paperwork, documentation, tracking, and communication between stakeholders.
  • Assist in streamlining workflows and reducing delays or duplicative efforts through effective coordination and follow-through.
  • Facilitate communication between the Program Office, Line Management, and staff to ensure clear expectations, timely updates, and alignment on priorities.
  • Help maintain formal communication protocols, schedules, tracking mechanisms, and reporting processes to support accountability and transparency.
  • Monitor project activities, milestones, deliverables, and action items to ensure work progresses in alignment with mission objectives and customer requirements.
  • Support prioritization of work activities based on organizational goals, resource availability, and evolving programmatic needs.
  • Foster collaboration and positive working relationships across internal and external stakeholders while maintaining responsiveness and operational agility.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of multi-year programmatic activities funded through one or multiple sources.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiencies that enhance program execution and customer engagement.
  • Support preparation of reports, briefings, status updates, and other programmatic documentation for leadership and stakeholders.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Qualifications We Desire:
  • Knowledge of nuclear materials management (e.g., material storage, control, shipping, or disposition) in accordance with DOE Order 410.2 Management of Nuclear Materials and DOE Standard M441-1.1.
  • Direct experience with relational databases, transactional databases, logic statements, basic algorithms, programming languages and/or script writing using MS Access/SQL.
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in all aspects of project management work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages, managing to scope, schedule, budget, and baselines, and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
  • Advanced knowledge of the discipline of the assigned project.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to the assigned project.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective mid-level internal customer relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor a variety of team efforts to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may/will require 24/7 coverage, which could/will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
