Work Location & Travel Expectations

This role supports projects across the United States and requires a high level of travel based on business and project needs. Candidates may be based anywhere within the U.S.; however, the selected individual should be prepared for assignments at various project locations nationwide. Travel for this position may reach up to approximately 90%.

Project assignments generally last 10 to 17 months, depending on project duration and operational requirements. While assigned to a project away from home, eligible employees are provided per diem to assist with temporary living and travel-related expenses, in addition to a competitive base salary.

To support project deployment, mobilization assistance may be provided, which can include mileage reimbursement or other approved travel support. Employees may also receive extended weekend rotations approximately once per month, allowing additional time for travel home.

Position Overview

The Project Controls Specialist is responsible for planning, measuring, and reporting the physical execution of fabrication work. This position translates drawing and spool packages into detailed production schedules, tracks earned progress against plan, measures shop productivity, and provides early visibility into schedule, cost, and production risks.

The Project Controls Specialist will work closely with fabrication, project management, quality, detailing, purchasing, warehouse, and cost controls teams to ensure fabrication activities remain aligned with field need dates and project commitments. This role is responsible for providing a clear and accurate answer to the question: Are we on schedule, and how do we know?

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain fabrication master schedules by job, system, and spool package, working backward from field need dates and required-on-site (ROS) dates
• Level shop loading across welding stations, fit-up tables, coating/testing bays, and other fabrication work centers
• Establish and maintain progress measurement baselines using budgeted shop hours and factored diameter-inches or weld-inches by spool
• Establish rules of credit for key fabrication milestones, including material issue, fit-up, weld-out, NDE, PWHT, hydro, paint, and shipment
• Publish weekly earned value reporting, including percent complete, earned versus actual hours, and SPI/CPI by job
• Partner with Quality Control to track weld log status, including welds completed and accepted, repair rates, and NDE backlog
• Reconcile weld counts and QC data to earned progress to ensure reported project status is accurate and defensible
• Measure and trend shop productivity, including diameter-inches per weld-hour by material family such as carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, and alloy
• Identify productivity variances and work with project teams to determine root causes, including rework, material delays, drawing holds, and other production constraints
• Maintain drawing and spool status registers, including IFC status, holds, revisions, and associated schedule impacts
• Coordinate with detailing teams to monitor isometric and spool drawing release dates and identify potential impacts to fabrication
• Track material readiness against the fabrication schedule in coordination with purchasing and warehouse teams
• Identify and communicate potential material shortages that could prevent scheduled spools from entering production
• Identify schedule and scope trends and maintain the project risk register and change log
• Quantify labor-hour and schedule-duration impacts associated with changes to support pricing and change management by Cost Controls
• Publish weekly shop reports covering schedule status, two- and six-week look-ahead schedules, earned value curves, productivity, shipping forecasts versus field need dates, and key project risks
• Maintain daily shop loading and station assignment status
• Prepare monthly schedule narratives for project reviews and support baseline change control and risk register updates
• Collaborate across project teams to proactively identify and resolve schedule and production constraints

Requirements

• 3-7 years of experience in project planning, scheduling, or project controls within industrial fabrication, construction, or a related environment
• Experience developing and maintaining detailed fabrication or construction schedules
• Proficiency with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project
• Working knowledge of earned value management principles and progress measurement methodologies
• Ability to read and understand isometric drawings, spool drawings, and fabrication packages
• Experience tracking fabrication progress through multiple production stages
• Understanding of welding, NDE, PWHT, hydrotesting, coating/painting, and shipping processes is strongly preferred
• Experience measuring and analyzing shop productivity and labor performance
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
• Experience with Power BI or other data visualization/reporting tools preferred
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify trends, variances, and potential schedule impacts
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with fabrication, QC, detailing, purchasing, warehouse, project management, and cost controls teams
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and provide accurate, timely reporting in a fast-paced industrial environment
