The Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial performance of assigned projects by managing project budgets, billing, cost tracking, and financial reporting. This role partners closely with Project Managers to ensure projects remain financially healthy while supporting month-end close, revenue recognition, and client invoicing. The ideal candidate has experience supporting architecture, engineering, or consulting projects, with strong knowledge of NYSDOT contracts and project accounting best practices.
Responsibilities
- Manage the financial performance of assigned projects from inception through completion.
- Partner with Project Managers to monitor project budgets, costs, profitability, and overall financial health.
- Prepare and process monthly client invoices in accordance with contract terms.
- Track and reconcile project costs, including subconsultant expenses and change orders.
- Monitor project revenue recognition and ensure compliance with GAAP.
- Perform month-end close activities, including reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial reporting.
- Prepare project financial reports and dashboards to support operational decision-making.
- Assist with project budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing reconciliations and supporting documentation.
- Maintain accurate project records within the accounting system and ensure data integrity.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of project accounting experience.
- Experience supporting architecture, engineering, construction, or professional services organizations.
- Strong experience with NYSDOT projects is required; experience with NYC agency contracts is highly preferred.
- Experience using Deltek Vantagepoint is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including reporting and data analysis.
- Experience creating financial dashboards and project performance reports is a plus.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, project accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree is not required; relevant experience is valued.

- Finance team operates primarily remotely, but candidates should be based in the New York City area or elsewhere on the East Coast (excluding Florida).
- Optional office workspace is available for those who prefer a hybrid environment.
- Occasional travel (1-2 times per year) for company and team meetings.
Compensation: $80,000-90,000Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
