Job description

Summary Description:

This position will drive the efficient production and optimization of paper machine or pulping operations within a production area of the mill. Role will also provide safety, quality, technical and operational support, especially technical leadership and guidance to team members working on the paper machine or pulp mill. Work activities will be a mix of on-the-floor interaction with operators and troubleshooting, as well as in-office interpretation of data.

Profile

Key Accountabilities:
  • Fully support the mill safety programs.
  • Provide technical expertise in the daily operations of the unit including assisting operators in resolving gaps between production and the plan through problem solving, analytical skills and leadership.
  • Provide high-quality process support and technical leadership to the mill's operations group resulting in improved product quality, new product development, productivity and reduced costs.
  • Coordinate, lead and implement activities or procedures to resolve equipment problems, maximize product quality and minimize cost. Carry out projects, if needed, by conducting trials including development of trial plans and writing trial reports.
  • Assist with machine shutdowns and start up.
  • Provide on-call and weekend duty coverage within a designated rotation.
  • Gain thorough understanding of unit operations, process equipment, and technology.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of plant operations, maintenance spending constraints, production commitments, costs, margins, capital projects, small projects and turnarounds.


Required Experience and Education:
Minimum Required Experience and Education:
  • 3-7 years of related Paper, Operational or manufacturing/industrial experience as a process engineer or supervisor
  • Bachelor's degree in pulp paper science, chemical engineering or a related field or equivalent work experience


Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Supervisory experience
  • Competency with Proficy, Parcview (millwide data from PI server), SAP, and manufacturing statistical tools such as MiniTab.

Minimum Required Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership, teamwork and presentation skills.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Critical thinking, trouble shooting and problem-solving skills - ability to reach a conclusion using relevant information and data and then determine the best actions in a timeframe that is consistent with business requirements.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Possess ambulatory capabilities to move freely about the mill, ascend and descend ladders and stairways, and tolerate temperature extremes.
