OVERVIEW

Merrick & Company is seeking a Process Engineer III with Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) expertise to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN. This role is well-suited for engineers who work at the intersection of process engineering and control systems, combining strong technical fundamentals with experience in instrumentation, automation, and system integration.

The selected candidate will contribute to advanced nuclear and energy-related projects, ensuring that process systems are designed with effective control, monitoring, and automation strategies. This position requires close coordination with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and I&C engineers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Develop and refine Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and General Arrangement Drawings, incorporating detailed instrumentation and control intent.
  • Perform process, equipment, and hydraulic sizing calculations.
  • Conduct sizing of control valves, pressure relief devices, and flow elements, considering system dynamics and control performance.
  • Define and document process control philosophies, control narratives, and functional descriptions.
  • Design and specify instrumentation systems, including transmitters, analyzers, and control elements.
  • Partner with I&C engineers to develop PLC/ PCS architectures, I/O lists, control logic, and alarm management strategies.
  • Translate process requirements into automated control strategies, including loop tuning and advanced control approaches where appropriate.
  • Support HAZOPs, operability studies, and control system design reviews.
  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure integrated process and control system design.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or related discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 8 years of process engineering experience, including substantial involvement in instrumentation and controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate process design with control system implementation.
  • Experience developing P&IDs with comprehensive instrumentation scope and control intent.
  • Working knowledge of process control principles, system dynamics, and loop tuning.
  • Familiarity with PLC/PCS systems, control logic development, and industrial automation architectures.
  • Experience with ChemCad, AFT Fathom, and AFT Arrow for process and hydraulic modeling.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Tennessee and/or South Carolina.
  • U.S. Citizenship required for project work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear projects.
  • Familiarity with ISA standards and nuclear I&C design requirements.
