Job Description:Principal Scientist - Cocoa chemistry and flavorThe Principal Scientist role will identify, develop, align and execute global cocoa chemistry programs as a technical subject matter expert that provides thought leadership, strategic direction, and program management across the whole cocoa value chain.
The role will:
Lead the development of cocoa flavor and chemistry capability to enable projects in support of Mars Cocoa Enterprise strategic priorities such as farming professionalization and origin diversification.
Champion the global transfer of cocoa competencies through educational programs, community of practice, consultancy, and knowledge capture to expedite the development of a global community of expertise.
Integrate scientific discipline to drive growth, efficiency and quality through implementation of global standard practices in chocolate, raw materials, and processes.
Provide mentorship to junior associates and global formulation extended community through coaching and development plan input.
What are we looking for?- PhD degree in Food Science, Food or Chemical Engineering, .Biochemical or relevant field.
- Minimum 8 years' experience in food or applicable industry acceptable.
- Demonstrated record of performing research in food, food ingredients or related systems
- Experience as a global project manager with direct/indirect responsibility for technicians, resources, CAB, with ability to prioritize portfolio.
- Advanced understanding of key scientific principles associated with food systems, and ingredient/process interactions.
- Working knowledge of food science and chemistry, in depth knowledge of cocoa specific interactions and processes.
- Experience with fermentation systems
- Expert knowledge of analytical chemistry applied to cocoa and/or flavor
- Ability to travel to Global Mars sites and cocoa producing countries required up to 20%

- Build and mentor teams and manage/disseminate standard practices globally and regionally.
- Plan and execute technical work to deliver product innovation, formulation, prototyping, product quality, and commercialization readiness against project objectives, timelines, quality, safety, and compliance expectations.
- Use data, experimentation, risk assessment, and technical judgment to make recommendations and resolve issues.
- Partner with cross-functional teams including R&D, manufacturing, quality, supply, commercial, regulatory, and external partners.
- Lead by example and champion knowledge management best practices to document hypothesis, specifications, methods, decisions, learnings, and handoffs in accordance with governance requirements.
- Lead complex investigations, establish best practices, influence technical strategy, and coach project

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position will include variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
