About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer in technology as part of the Consumer Technology & generative AI team. This role serves as a strategic technology leader, partnering with senior business and engineering stakeholders to align technology investments with organizational objectives and complex business needs. The individual will drive innovation by evaluating emerging technologies, defining future-state strategies, and translating business opportunities into scalable, resilient, and forward-looking engineering solutions. They will lead the delivery of both immediate and long-term technology initiatives, leveraging advanced analytical thinking and deep technical expertise to enhance operational efficiency and competitive advantage. Additionally, this role will champion a culture of collaboration, continuous innovation, and technology adoption across the organization.
In this role, you will:
- Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
- Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
- Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
- Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
- Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
- Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
- 7+ years of software engineering, platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), or distributed systems experience, including leadership of large-scale, mission-critical production platforms supporting high transaction volumes.
- 7+ years of in-depth expertise in designing/operating/supporting highly available, resilient, and scalable platforms, including microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, cloud-native technologies, Kubernetes/OpenShift, and hybrid cloud environments.
- 7+ years of experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple organizations, influencing architecture decisions, technology strategy, engineering standards, and long-term modernization roadmaps.
- 7+ years hands-on experience with observability, automation, and operational excellence practices, including monitoring, distributed tracing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, incident management, and reliability engineering principles.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience supporting Digital Payments platforms and financial transaction processing systems, including Zelle, ACH, RTP, FedNow, Wire Transfers, Debit/Credit Card processing, settlement, reconciliation, or payment network integrations.
- Expert knowledge of performance engineering, resiliency design, and large-scale production operations, including capacity planning, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, high availability architectures, and major incident leadership.
- Experience implementing AI-assisted engineering capabilities, including Generative AI, Agentic AI, GitHub Copilot, intelligent automation, AIOps, software development acceleration, and operational productivity improvements.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity, technology risk management, and regulatory compliance requirements applicable to financial services platforms, including secure architecture, threat mitigation, resiliency controls, and audit readiness.
- Proven ability to mentor and develop engineering talent while establishing enterprise standards and best practices, serving as a technical thought leader across software engineering, SRE, observability, cloud engineering, and platform modernization initiatives.

Pay Range
Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to demonstrated examples of prior performance, skills, experience, or work location. Employees may also be eligible for incentive opportunities.
$159,000.00 - $305,000.00
