Opportunity Overview:The
Principal Geotechnical Engineer is a senior technical and project leader who provides expert geotechnical judgment, oversees complex investigations and designs, and serves as a high-level technical resource for clients and project teams.
What You'll Do:- Technical Leadership
- Provide senior-level expertise in geotechnical engineering, including foundations, slopes, retaining walls, earthwork, settlement, and soil/rock behavior.
- Establish technical approaches for complex or high-risk projects.
- Review and approve geotechnical calculations, reports, specifications, and recommendations.
- Project Leadership
- Lead or provide technical oversight on major geotechnical investigations and design projects.
- Develop scopes, budgets, schedules, and staffing requirements.
- Monitor project quality, profitability, and technical performance.
- Serve as the senior technical resource for Project Managers and staff engineers.
- Client & Business Development
- Develop and maintain relationships with key clients.
- Participate in proposals, interviews, presentations, and business development activities.
- Identify opportunities for additional geotechnical services.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to clients.
- Quality & Risk Management
- Perform senior-level technical and peer reviews.
- Identify geotechnical risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Ensure work complies with applicable codes, standards, and professional engineering practices.
- Provide technical support on challenging field conditions, claims, and construction issues.
- Mentoring & Staff Development
- Mentor Geotechnical Engineers, Project Managers, and junior staff.
- Provide guidance on technical development and professional licensure.
- Help establish technical standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Construction Support if needed
- Provide engineering judgment during construction when actual subsurface conditions differ from expectations.
- Review field observations, laboratory results, contractor submittals, and geotechnical changes.
- Assist with resolving construction-related geotechnical issues.
What You Bring- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred with Geotechnical focus).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (GA or SC required with the ability to obtain others as needed).
- 15+ years of geotechnical or civil engineering consulting experience.
- Strong background in geotechnical engineering and transportation infrastructure.
- Extensive experience with DOT projects and technical deliverable review.
