POSITION CONCEPT: The Principal Architect - Facilities serves as the fleet-wide technical authority for building and facility-related capital projects across the company's commercial assets. Provides advanced technical leadership, architectural/engineering design oversight, and lifecycle guidance for upgrades, replacements, and new construction within the company's operating/service areas. Ensures that all facility projects, including administrative buildings, control rooms, maintenance facilities, warehouses, labs, training spaces, and site infrastructure are planned and executed in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices. Operates as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for building systems, coordinating closely with project managers, engineering disciplines, operations, and external consultants to ensure safe, resilient, cost-effective, and constructible solutions. Directly influences scope development, design criteria, quality assurance, and technical risk management through every phase of the project lifecycle.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Lead architectural/engineering scope development for capital projects including renovations, expansions, replacements, and new facility construction. Includes coordination with mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, and building controls engineers to ensure integrated design of facility systems (HVAC, lighting, fire protection, etc.).
- Support long-term planning and capital program development across the commercial fleet.
- Define design requirements, performance criteria, and basis-of-design documentation.
- Review and approve consultant deliverables: drawings, specifications, calculations, building code narratives, and cost estimates.
- Conduct design reviews at key project stages (workshop, conceptual (10%), preliminary (30%), detailed design (60-90-100), IFC).
- Identify value engineering opportunities, ensuring cost-effective, long-term facility solutions
- Oversee code compliance and permitting considerations. Provide technical oversight during construction, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field change evaluations.
- Conduct site visits to verify field conditions, assess construction progress, and support resolution of technical issues. Ensure that contractor methodologies align with design intent, safety expectations, and quality requirements.
- Support commissioning and turnover activities, ensuring building systems meet design intent and operational requirements.
- Partner with Project Management, Project Controls, Procurement, and Construction teams to ensure alignment of schedule, budget, and design deliverables.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:Required: Registration as a Registered Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of Florida
SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE:Required: 3 years of supervisory experience of team members and/or managing and guiding contractor services.
Preferred: 5 years of engineering/architectural supervision.
EDUCATION:Required: Bachelor of Science in Architecture or Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college.
Preferred: Master's degree in engineering, architecture, or engineering management
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 8 years of work experience consisting of work in heavy industry or utility business with a focus on Project Engineering.
Preferred: 6 years of direct work experience with an electric utility.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Required: Demonstrated sound knowledge of commercial design practices and principles. Demonstrated technical leadership on complex, multi-discipline facility projects. Deep knowledge of applicable codes, building systems, design coordination, and construction practices. Strong communication skills with ability to guide diverse project teams and influence technical decisions.
Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge of company policies and work procedures. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office.

WORKING CONDITIONS:Travel (national/international) - Up to 10%. Travel from home office to operating stations, service areas, or facilities expected and could be frequent.
Working outdoors in hot, humid, wet and/or cold conditions 10% to 20% of the workday.
Working in an operating facility requiring proper PPE.
Working in areas of elevated noise, heights and confined spaces.
Some overtime (weekends and holidays) as required.
Occasional "On Call" availability
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS: Sitting, walking, bending and climbing.
Requires climbing stairs and scaffolding, utilizing safety harnesses, ability to stand and walk for extended period of time, working in noise, dust and high humidity areas while utilizing personal protection equipment.
Flexibility to crawl in and out of tight confined areas.
