Full Job Description

The Verizon Cloud Platform (VCP) is a private cloud infrastructure that supports Verizon's Network Functions across 60 data centers in the United States. At the core of VCP is WebScale, which is Verizon's Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) platform built on the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) and Kubernetes. This platform enables the automated deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications across our network.

As a Principal Member of Technical Staff (PMTS) on the VCP Core WebScale Operations team, you will play a vital role in building, upgrading, and maintaining this mission-critical platform around the clock. WebScale is currently experiencing rapid growth to support 5G Core and other essential applications, and your role will be central to this expansion.

What you’ll be doing...

The Principal Cloud Platform Engineer is a senior-level position within our practice. You will perform tasks that are required to maintain and advance our cloud environment. This includes interfacing with tenants and peer support teams.

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for leading the implementation of feature designs and providing feedback to engineering on solutions to improve reliability and performance. The candidate will partner with key stakeholders to ensure new releases and/or fixes are swiftly tested and rolled out with no negative impact to customers. The candidate will have the opportunity to envision and operationalize system and network variables to benchmark the platform and to ensure reliability and performance metrics are met.

  • Provide 24x7 operational support for WebScale cloud infrastructure and associated applications

  • Respond to and resolve customer-impacting events with urgency and precision

  • Execute nighttime maintenance windows and platform upgrades

  • Support the expansion of WebScale to meet 5G Core and application growth demands

  • Modernize VCP workflows through strategic, AI-driven initiatives that improve operational efficiency and reduce toil

  • Design and build greenfield Flex Clusters, expanding platform capacity to meet evolving network demands

  • Drive continuous improvements to upgrade agility and customer-impacting resiliency across the platform

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to drive platform stability, reliability, and performance

  • Monitoring platform efficiencies, logging, and alarming while focusing on operational discipline and security best practices.

  • Maintaining window activities, on-call duties and escalations.

  • Providing advanced support for the Verizon Cloud Platform. Responsible for the WebScale environment, the backend storage, and the underlying network infrastructure.

  • Troubleshooting failures and productivity-impacting events.

What we’re looking for...

You’re a technical specialist with solid credentials and a remarkable ability to find, break down, and solve problems. You work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, and you’re phenomenal at partnering with the groups you support. You constantly look for ways to make a great network design better, and you’re a natural mentor to junior engineers looking to develop their technical skills.

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.

  • Six or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.

  • Hands-on experience with OpenShift and Kubernetes (K8S).

  • Understanding of cloud networking concepts including BGP, VLANs, and overlay networks.

  • Experience with log aggregation and analysis platforms (Splunk, EFK stack).

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Five or more years of UNIX/Linux experience.
