JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technical Expertise - Perform routine procedures of a Medical Lab Scientist, including collecting and analyzing data, which will affect decisions regarding patient care. Maintain working knowledge of procedures and strong technical proficiency. Participates in patient testing as needed to meet the needs of the department. Assists and supports technical staff with routine testing, preventive maintenance, technical studies, and troubleshooting. Supports innovation through new test development and implementation of new testing platforms.

  • Lab Operations - Ensure quality in all aspects of the laboratory operation, coordinating and collaborating with leadership regarding all testing and reporting issues. Aid in the selection of appropriate methodologies, verification of procedures, and establishment of performance characteristics. Ensure procedure manuals are current, available, and reviewed annually and all employees are educated and trained on all revisions.

  • Personnel Management & Development - Supervise reporting personnel. Participate in and provide significant input regarding recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, development, and/or retention. Mentor and develop assigned staff. Identify and work to correct personnel management issues. Conduct ongoing evaluation and mentoring of direct reports, including effective, clear, and timely annual performance evaluation. Ensure staff are appropriately trained to perform job functions. Determine and monitor the implementation of continuing education goals of the department and provide educational opportunities for department staff. Ensure departmental and medical center initiatives, priorities, standards, and policies are effectively communicated and understood through direct and indirect reports.

  • Regulatory & Compliance - Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, such as TJC, HIPAA, and/or other accreditation standards. Design and/or implement programs, policies, and/or procedures to ensure compliance. Track laws and regulations that might affect policies and procedures. May prepare compliance reports and communicate results as necessary. Ensure safety standards are maintained in the workspace and enforces compliance to infection prevention and safe work practices.

  • Budget Management - Assist with department fiscal responsibilities as requested.  Monitor budget expenditures; identify, evaluate, research, and/or manage variances/problems.  Assist in tracking and monitoring revenue, expense, and allocations.  Provide applicable reports.  May track funding and maintain accurate balances in funds and accounts.  May assist in preparing, writing, and/or maintaining the fiscal budget. May research information for major purchases.

  • Quality Assurance - Manage the quality of testing processes within the laboratory section through audits. Monitors indicative of high-quality processes and systems. Identifies and leads improvement activities within and across laboratory disciplines.

Provide day-to-day operational leadership in a CAP certified laboratory location or common functional departments within the laboratory site of care.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 4+ years technical experience in a related laboratory setting

  • Demonstrated leadership experience

  • Qualified by CLIA/CAP standards minimally as a general supervisor

  • Preferred: Certification by national laboratory accrediting agency
