Our Personal Lines Underwriting team is currently seeking a Underwriting Manager in our Worcester, MA or Howell, MI location.This is a full time, exempt role. This role is a hybrid opportunity.POSITION OVERVIEWUnder limited supervision and with significant independent judgment, supervises and coordinates the activities of personal lines underwriting staff to facilitate the growth and profitability of personal lines business.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:- Ensures the profitability and growth of personal lines business, including:
- Supervises the underwriting function to ensure timely decision making, proper risk selection, pricing, and monitoring of business.
- Works with staff to build and maintain agency relationships
- Reviews complex underwriting inquiries and reviews and approves risks beyond the authority of staff.
- Works collaboratively with the field marketing function to facilitate the resolution of service and other issues between the agency and the company. Attend weekly/monthly calls with field and senior leadership.
- Oversees the handling of customer inquiries and complaints.
- Demonstrates strong negotiation skills with internal and external customers
- Ensures adherence to underwriting policies, guidelines and procedures.
- Collaborates with peers to assess the demand and ensure proper alignment of resources across PL Underwriting to successfully meet department performance objectives.
- Recommends and communicates goals. Develops underwriting team members to ensure the achievement of required results.
- Develops, recommends and implements risk management plans and procedures locally and assists in implementation/recommendations countrywide.
- Prepares and/or reviews performance appraisals. Conducts performance review meetings and may recommend and/or implement employment actions.
- Participates in quality review and corporate audits; translates and implements best practices to build strong underwriting acumen.
- Identifies key issues and communicate to the proper audience in an appropriate and timely manner.
- May serve as a contributing member or leader of project team(s), coordinating resources to ensure achievement of project goals.
- Responsible for motivating team members to support initiatives and projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:- Bachelor's degree with 3 to 6 years underwriting experience. Prior supervisory or team lead experience preferred.
- Able to understand and articulate Personal Lines underwriting in a way that drives and achieves team(s) results. Possess advanced risk management knowledge combined with the ability to teach others.
- Strong people management skills, effective at coaching and supporting their team's professional development. Serves as a role model in building effective relationships.
- Excellent communicator; communicates frequently in a clear, concise manner
- Effectively and creatively utilizes all resources (systems, people, etc.) to manage daily operations
- Effective problem solver, who anticipates issues, seeks out and analyzes information collaboratively to propose solutions. Takes ownership for a successful resolution.
