Pediatric Intensive Care Unit ARNP/PA

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is seeking a 90-100% Critical Care ARNP/PA to work weekday, weekend, holiday 12 hours shifts ([redacted]). Qualified candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus of $20,000. Internal candidates are not eligible for sign-on bonus. This position may be eligible for a transition and relocation allowance .

In this position, you will provide overall medical care and provide medical management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided, at Stead Family Children's Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit . Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults within the ICU. Extensive focus caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care on 24/7 basis. This position is located in Iowa City, IA.

Position Responsibilities:

• Assesses the patient's health status by means of history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and any additional means that are determined to be appropriate, including performance of the following procedures (but not limited to) i. e. PICC lines, arterial lines, central venous catheters.
• Plans and communicates treatment programs relating to the health aspects of the patient's needs.
• Recognizes, discriminates, and manages acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
• Determines and facilitates referral and consultation needs in a timely manner.
• Completes medicine documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
• Initiates therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines.
• Completes MAC, human resource, outreach, and other administrative paperwork.
• Integrates health information into the diagnoses and treatment plan for each patient and may assist the patient and family in the implementation of the plan in the community.
• Performs other projects as assigned.
• Ability to synthesize scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice at the advanced nurse practitioner level.
• Understands nursing theory, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics with ability to perform patient and family assessment by means of an appropriately comprehensive history and physical examination, develop differential diagnosis based on history, physical and interpretation of appropriately ordered tests and evaluations, develop a plan of care and implement treatment including referrals and prescriptions, and evaluate patient responses to health, illness and treatment.
• Ability to identify patient/family/community care and education needs. Develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the care plan, coordinating care as indicated with referral and consultation resources, community support agencies, schools, and local primary care providers.
• Provides an ongoing health education program for patients and their families, utilizing all available media.
• Knowledge of research activities, research findings, and quality improvement principles related to patient outcomes with ability to participate in development and implementation of such activities.
• Ability to utilize therapeutic communication skills to provide counseling to patients and families.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP):

• A Master's Degree is required. A Doctor of Nursing is preferred.
  • If Master's Degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required
• Current Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC or CPNP-PC).
• Current ARNP license from the State of Iowa is required.

Physician Assistant (PA):

• Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which includes graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
• Current certification as Physician Assistant.
• Current license to practice as a physician assistant in the State of Iowa.

Experience Requirements:

• Ability to perform technical skill and function as an independent practitioner defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing, and UI Health Care standards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Desired Qualifications:

• 1 - 3 years of prior direct patient care experience in area of pediatrics OR previous experience that demonstrates knowledge of the care of sick pediatric patients.
• Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components
• Demonstrated Level III PICU experience
• Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in an inpatient setting is highly desirable.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Federal DEA license.
• Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated experience in clinical care of pediatrics.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision, critical thinking/problem solving skills and attention to detail.
• Current certification as a nurse practitioner (Acute Care NP) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa.
• Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
