What's in it for you?

The Payroll Specialist can be based out of Skyline Construction's San Francisco or San Jose office and is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for approximately 400 employees working in commercial construction. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, union payroll, multi-state payroll, and construction-specific payroll reporting. The Payroll Specialist works closely with Human Resources, Project Managers, Accounting, and field supervisors to maintain payroll accuracy and compliance.

As a Payroll Specialist, you will serve in the following areas:

  • Process weekly payroll for approximately 400 employees.
  • Review and audit employee timecards, labor allocations, job costing, and payroll data for accuracy.
  • Process payroll adjustments including bonuses, reimbursements, deductions, garnishments, and retroactive pay.
  • Ensure accurate allocation of labor costs to projects and cost codes.
  • Prepare and submit certified payroll reports for prevailing wage projects.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, including Davis-Bacon requirements where applicable.
  • Process union payroll, union dues, fringe benefits, and related reporting, if applicable.
  • Administer wage garnishments, child support orders, tax levies, and other involuntary deductions.
  • Process new hires, terminations, pay rate changes, promotions, and employee status changes within the payroll system.
  • Reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate payroll reports.
  • Ensure timely payment of payroll taxes and filing of required payroll tax reports.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll reporting, including W-2 processing.


  • Assist with audits by providing payroll records and supporting documentation.


  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, taxes, and timekeeping.


  • Maintain confidentiality of employee payroll information.


  • Partner with Human Resources regarding benefits deductions, leave tracking, and employee records.


  • Maintain payroll files and documentation in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.


  • Recommend process improvements to increase payroll accuracy and efficiency.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.


The successful candidate will possess:

  • Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.


  • Minimum of 3-5 years of payroll processing experience.


  • Construction industry payroll experience strongly preferred.


  • Experience processing payroll for 300+ employees.


  • Experience with certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting a plus.


  • Knowledge of multi-state payroll processing.


  • Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations and wage laws.


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.


  • Experience with payroll and ERP software (Vista by Viewpoint, Foundation, Sage, UKG, ADP, or similar systems preferred).


  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.


  • Ability to meet strict payroll deadlines while managing multiple priorities.


  • Strong customer service and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation preferred.


  • Experience with union payroll administration.


  • Knowledge of construction job costing and labor burden allocation.


  • Experience with electronic timekeeping systems.

  • Thorough knowledge of payroll processing procedures and payroll accounting.


  • Understanding of construction payroll practices, certified payroll, and prevailing wage compliance.

$42.12 - $50.59 an hour

The actual salary will be carefully considered based on a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. The range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
