We are seeking a motivated Professional Engineer to join the Pavements Branch, a team of engineers dedicated to evaluating, designing, and preserving one of the nation's largest highway networks. This role offers the opportunity to work on pavement design, forensic investigations, rehabilitation strategies, emerging technologies, and statewide technical support. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, solve complex engineering challenges, and contribute to policies and best practices that improve the safety and performance of Texas highways.

Transportation Engineer II, B25: $69,572 - $114,099
Transportation Engineer III, B26: $76,530 - $129,430

Position Description Transportation Engineer I Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Engineer III Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer I- Assists in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
- Performs engineering analysis of statewide pavement conditions and develops reports on pavement conditions
- Performs pavement designs and makes recommendations.
- Performs/monitors field applications of experimental features or other innovative methods.
- Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
- Reviews literature, technical data, material specifications and procedures.
- Writes reports, specifications and test procedures.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Transportation Engineer IIAll of the above and
- Develops training courses and/or materials.
- Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- Provides information regarding innovative and experimental technologies to department personnel.

Transportation Engineer IIIAll of the above and
- Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
- Develops, recommends, and implements modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.
- Evaluates the performance of new transportation products.
- Performs and/or documents in-house research studies.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
Transportation Engineer I - 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer II - 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer III - 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: - Previous experience in concrete pavements, flexible pavements, pavement evaluations and design is preferred.
