Position Information

Are you a Professional Engineer that has an interest in performing highly advanced and complex transportation engineering drainage and water management design? Working in areas such as planning, project development/design, construction, and/or maintenance. You would be the main point of contact for sharing critical knowledge, setting policies, and guiding others in hydrology and hydraulics across the district.

This means you'll be designing, reviewing, and approving high complexity drainage plans and studies and making sure projects meet all federal and state standards before they move forward.

Beyond the technical side, you'll also mentor staff, solve drainage problems for the district, and coordinate with outside groups, playing a key role in protecting our infrastructure and environment. Excellent communication skills are a must! Your work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Annual Salary Group:

Transportation Engineer IV: B27 ($84,182 - $142,347 annually)

Position Description

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for highly complex projects.
  • Coordinates and/or monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans,
    specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Provides technical assistance in drainage design, resolution of drainage complaints, hydraulics evaluations and other
    hydrology matters.
  • Trains engineering staff.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
