Job Summary:
HCA Healthcare Pathology Services (HPS) is seeking a Pathology Market Medical Director to lead pathology and clinical laboratory services for LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, and for the LewisGale system's three community hospitals in Pulaski, Blacksburg, and Low Moor, Virginia. This is a high-level leadership position, perfect for an experienced pathologist interested in leading a group of dedicated pathologists, pathologists' assistants, and laboratory staff, and in serving as the primary representative of pathology and clinical laboratory services to the system's clinical staff and administration.

The Market Medical Director for LewisGale will assume a leadership position within the Capital Division of HPS, collaborating with the Division Medical Director and other market leaders in Virginia and New Hampshire to share knowledge and enhance quality and efficiency of pathology and clinical laboratory services.

The position represents an outstanding opportunity for an experienced pathologist with interest in leadership to practice high quality pathology in a supportive environment, while living in one of American's most beautiful regions.

Qualified Candidates:
  • AP/CP Board Certification required
  • Medical directorship experience with desire to provide mentorship required
  • Serve as primary advocate and representative for pathology and clinical laboraties to administartion and medical staff (including membership on Medical Executive Committee)
  • Serve as medical director for main hospital laboratory
  • Provide regular continuing education (two sessions per year) to clinical laboratory staff
  • Recent experience signing out general surgical pathology and performing frozen sections is required
  • Virginia licensed or FCVS in place preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
Pathology volumes/Cases:
  • The practice consists of 3-4 pathologists
  • Case volumes (per pathologist): Approximately 3500-4000 surgical cases per year and 700-1000 non-GYN cytology cases per year
  • Procedures (per pathologist): Few than 10 combined frozen sections and rapid on-site assessments per week
  • Tumor boards: Shared equally. One weekly general tumor board; one monthly breast tumor board.
  • Call: shared equally. Responsibilities include handling clinical laboratory calls (avg. 0-1 per night), and very rarely perform on-site after-hours procedures. Weekend call includes coverage of 3 smaller satellites.
  • No gyn cytology or autopsy responsibility.
  • Services providing significant case volumes include GI, breast, GU, and general surgery
  • All specimens are processed at LGMC
