Full Job Description
What You Will Be Doing:

The application engineer applies sound engineering practices makes recommendations as to the appropriate application / installation of the engine product to ensure maximum performance and optimum service life. The A&I Engineer liaises with customers to define requirements and ensure the correct selection of engine product for life cycle and power consumption expectations. In conjunction with the sales team, the application engineer will collaborate with Perkins Engine Co. in the creation of cost estimates, component compatibility analyses and the production of bills of material (BOMs) and installation drawings in support of the selling efforts. The A&I Engineer designs / drafts customer-equipment-interface electrical schematics and mechanical installation into engine envelope as well as connection points for fuel / cooling systems and powertrain components.

The application engineer performs installation audits to validate the integrity of the engine installation into customer's equipment and recommends correction of same should there be shortcomings or areas of improvement.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Create engine specs, builds of material, and perform installation reviews for OEM and Distributor customer base.
  • Ensure that Perkins and Pathfinder standards for engine installation are adhered to for each application.
  • Perform data acquisition tasks on new engine installations.
  • Perform calculations and engineering analysis for mechanical and electrical systems for new applications and installations.
  • Negotiate and manage engineering improvements as required for OEM customers.
  • Maintain engineering database on each active application and manage the design & installation review workflow.
  • Respond to engineering-related questions for Sales Department's new and existing applications.
  • Assist Sales in the proper selection of engines and options for new applications.
  • Support Service functions through engineering analysis of pattern failures, dyno testing of specific engines, etc.
  • Understand the processes within various Pathfinder Power Solutions functional areas such as Parts, Service, Warranty, etc. Assist with problems as they arise with our end-user customers, OEMs, and second level dealers.
  • Develop / exhibit high competence in Perkins product line knowledge and understanding of Perkins engineering guidelines and practices.
  • Expand understanding of Perkins engineering practices through specific training sessions, ad-hoc discussions with managers and senior engineers, and through self-study.
  • Exhibit an engineering curiosity about various customers' applications and specific engineering challenges.
  • Participate in Service Department training sessions as new systems are introduced.
  • Willingness to travel throughout and beyond the territory to accomplish position responsibilities including but not limited to factory, packager/assembler, various product manufacturer's, other dealers, meetings, technical events, etc.
  • Recognize potential sales opportunities and work with across the organization as appropriate to develop opportunities.
  • Maintain a high degree of product and industry knowledge through factory programs, product updates, technical information, Industry Associations/Agencies, codes, applicable Federal, State and Local laws/codes, etc.
  • Work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and nights as required by workload and customer need.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participate in required safety program, and work in a safe manner.

Who We Are Looking For:

To be successful in this position you should have 10+ years of experience in the sale and application of drive train componentry with medium to high volume OEM's. You should possess a strong sense of urgency and desire to provide superior customer service. The ability to provide direction and instruction and work in a team environment is essential to this position as well.
Education/Experience:
  • 5+ years of application engineering or project management experience with diesel engines, generator sets, hydraulic and mechanical drivetrains and operating support systems associated with each.
  • Four year college degree from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Professional experience with SolidWorks 3D Software
Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Must have strong human relationship skills and the ability to work with people from all backgrounds and cultures, internally and externally, with appropriate influence and ability to resolve project issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proactive in the approach of taking care of issues before they become problems.
  • High energy level, excellent organization, and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 5+ years of direct customer contact experience.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Adobe Acrobat business software.
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced, team driven environment.
  • Ability to handle pressured situations with professionalism and calm and work without supervision.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities acquired through receiving a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering discipline.
  • A team player, cooperative, collaborative, willing and able to work easily and synergistically with others.
  • Occasionally Lift/Carry/Lower 15 - 30 lbs, seldom Lift/Carry/Lower +30 Lbs.
  • Occasionally pushing/pulling, reaching (both above and below shoulder), bending/twisting, walking, standing, repetition - hand/wrist simple and firm grasping.
