Overview:

The Operations Manager - Special Systems is responsible for the overall execution, performance, and consistency of special systems operations across projects. This role provides direct leadership and oversight to Special Systems Project Managers and serves as the primary operational link between the Project Managers and division leadership. The Operations Manager ensures that projects are executed in accordance with company policies, contractual requirements, safety standards, financial objectives, and operational best practices. This role is accountable for aligning Project Manager performance, resolving cross-project operational challenges, and driving predictable, profitable project outcomes across the construction portfolio.

Essential Functions:

1. Leadership & Oversight:
  • Provides direct leadership, guidance, and oversight to all Project Managers.
  • Ensures Project Managers are effectively managing assigned projects and accounts in alignment with Alterman standards.
  • Works with division leadership to evaluate Project Manager performance and identify development opportunities.
  • Leads and facilitates resolution of escalated project, customer, staffing, contractual, or financial issues in coordination with Project Managers.
  • Ensures consistency in project execution, reporting, forecasting, and review processes across all Project Managers.
  • Reinforces accountability for project outcomes while promoting collaboration and best practices.

2. Construction Operations Management:
  • Ensures projects are planned, staffed, scheduled, and executed in accordance with approved budgets, schedules, and contracts.
  • Monitors project review processes (25-50-75-90% reviews) to ensure timely identification and mitigation of risks.
  • Supports resolution of disputes, claims, and change management issues before escalation to division leadership.
  • Ensures adherence to company policies, procedures, and operational controls across all projects.

3. Financial & Risk Oversight:
  • Monitors overall financial performance of construction projects, including profitability, cash flow, labor productivity, and cost controls.
  • Reviews job cost projections, forecasts, and aging reports across Project Managers to ensure accuracy and timely corrective action.
  • Ensures consistent billing, collections, and receivables management practices are followed.
  • Identifies trends, risks, and variances across the project portfolio and works with Project Managers to implement corrective actions.
  • Supports division leadership in maximizing profitability and minimizing operational and financial risk.

4. Staffing, Resource Planning & Safety:
  • Works with division leadership and Labor to ensure appropriate staffing levels across projects.
  • Assists with selection, placement, and performance evaluation of key supervisory and field personnel.
  • Reinforces and monitors compliance with corporate safety policies and safety-first culture across all projects.
  • Partners with Safety to address trends, incidents, and corrective actions.

5. Performs other duties as assigned by division leadership.

Education and Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of combined experience in sales/marketing, strategic customer development, estimating, project management, and design in a full range of integrated building technologies (Voice/Data, Audio Visual, Security and Card Access, Sound, and PA).

Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proven leadership and team management across large-scale special systems projects.
  • Strong strategic planning and project execution skills.
  • Results-driven with a focus on quality, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the preparation of overall project schedules and lookahead schedules.
  • Knowledge of the BICSI Technology Standards and other related standards and codes.
  • Proficient computer skills with all basic office programs (Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook) and the ability to learn and use related software and systems are required. Advanced computer skills are a plus.

Work Environment:
  • Office environment with some travel required.

Physical Demands:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
