Full Job Description

To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols (e.g., chemotherapy) as defined by standardized procedures or independently based on licensure. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

Provides patient care in a team based care environment to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

  • Must obtain CITI Certification within 3 months from hire as a condition of employment.

  • Minimum of one year clinical experience in Oncology as an RN or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.

Department Overview

The Division of Hematology Oncology (Hem Onc) is one of 14 divisions in the Department of Internal Medicine at UC Davis Health. Hem Onc includes more than 40 physician and researcher faculty, five MSP associate physicians, 11 advanced practice providers, and numerous administrative, financial, clinical and research staff. Hem Onc is actively involved in the UC Davis Comprehensive Center, generating the majority of the Center's clinical trials. Hem Onc's physician fellowship program includes a hematology-focused track. The Division also has clinic sites in Rocklin, Folsom, and East Sacramento.

Department Specific Job Scope

Assists Hematology/Oncology physicians in the therapeutic management of patients with hematology and/or oncology diseases. Understands detail clinical protocols and performs tasks per protocol requirements. Education will be in the form of discussion of specific hematology and/or oncology disease treatments. Ongoing education will be provided during clinic visits. Facilitates and promotes a culture of participation in clinical trials.
Knowledge of hospital policy and procedures, standardized procedures, and scope of nursing practice. Ability to problem solve with interest and ability to teach and educate. Ability to learn or efficiently use computer programs as required for the position. Occasional overtime may be required based on program needs. Working on holidays and weekends may also be required. May require coverage of additional services based on Division needs. Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
