The Mountain Peak Power Plant is a state-of-the-art natural gas-fired peaking facility located in Keenesburg, Colorado. Designed to support United Power's electric cooperative, the plant delivers 162 megawatts of flexible, on-demand power using six GE Vernova LM2500XPRESS aeroderivative gas turbines. The facility enhances grid reliability and helps the region meet peak electricity demand.

Opportunity Summary

The O&M / Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of Mountain Peak Power Plant. This position performs plant startups, shutdowns, equipment monitoring, and routine operations while providing advanced IC&E support for instrumentation, controls, automation, and electrical systems. The Technician troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, and maintains plant equipment to support reliable generation and rapid response to changing system demands.

Your scope of responsibility as O&M / IC&E Technician includes the following primary functions:

IC&E Systems Maintenance

  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems from 24V DC through 13.8kV AC, including MCCs, transformers, relays, breakers, motors, VFDs, and switchgear.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair process instrumentation, including flow, pressure, temperature, and analytical equipment, using appropriate test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain PLCs, turbine and plant control systems, DCS/SCADA equipment, control cards, wiring, terminations, and associated automation systems.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, control logic diagrams, and technical documentation to diagnose faults and restore equipment functionality.
  • Perform preventive and corrective IC&E maintenance and support equipment inspections, commissioning, outages, and emergency maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate CMMS records, calibration documentation, drawings, and other technical records associated with completed work.
  • Coordinate IC&E activities with plant personnel, contractors, and OEM representatives while ensuring compliance with safety and quality requirements.


Operations & Equipment Support

  • Start, operate, monitor, and shut down combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and associated electrical and mechanical equipment in accordance with plant procedures.
  • Perform equipment rounds and monitor temperatures, pressures, vibration, fluid levels, operating hours, and other parameters to identify abnormal conditions.
  • Operate and monitor auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, generator cooling systems, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform operational testing, inspections, minor repairs, adjustments, and basic mechanical troubleshooting to maintain equipment reliability and availability.
  • Identify and respond to abnormal operating conditions, taking appropriate corrective action within established procedures and promptly communicating equipment issues.
  • Prepare and isolate equipment for maintenance and assist plant personnel during planned and forced outages, troubleshooting, repairs, and other maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs and CMMS documentation and perform other duties as assigned to support safe and reliable plant operations.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Plant Manager, contributing to overall plant efficiency and effectiveness.

Working Relationships

The O&M / IC&E Technician reports directly to the Plant Manager. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The O&M / IC&E Technician works a rotating 10-hour shift schedule, alternating between days and nights. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $40 to $50 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Core Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or technical training in electrical, instrumentation, controls, or a related field is preferred.
  • Power generation or similar industrial experience, preferably within natural gas-fired peaking, simple-cycle, or aeroderivative turbine facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems from 24V DC through 13.8kV, including MCCs, transformers, relays, breakers, motors, VFDs, and switchgear.
  • Advanced experience troubleshooting and maintaining instrumentation, controls, and automation systems; GE Vernova LM2500XPRESS or similar aeroderivative turbine experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency calibrating process instrumentation and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs, control logic diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with PLC diagnostics/programming and DCS/SCADA systems used for plant monitoring and control.
  • Ability to perform plant operations, including equipment startups, shutdowns, rounds, monitoring, and response to abnormal operating conditions.
  • Experience supporting planned and forced outages, emergency maintenance, troubleshooting, and maintenance of turbines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Strong safety focus with demonstrated knowledge of LOTO and safe electrical and industrial work practices.
  • Proficiency with CMMS and standard computer applications for maintenance, operational, and technical documentation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with plant personnel, contractors, and OEM representatives.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver's license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
