Full Job Description
Position Overview:

The Nuclear Materials Engineering Manager is responsible for leadership and general management of the NME group located at LTC. Currently, NME is staffed by a supervisor, engineers and technicians. This role is responsible for all aspects of NME performance including NRC license compliance, industrial and nuclear safety, quality assurance, operational management, customer communications, project management, contract proposal development and administration, new business marketing, budget performance, and profit & loss (P&L) financial performance.

The position will be based on site in Lynchburg, VA at LTC.

Your Day to Day as a Nuclear Materials Engineering Manager:

Either directly or through delegation to subordinates, position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conduct of operations within NOG Mount Athos site NRC license, including:
    • Radiation protection and personnel exposure.
    • Protection, isolation, and storage of radioactive and nuclear materials.
    • Evaluation and authorization of laboratory processes and procedures through established reviews and authorization procedures and policies.
    • Establishment and maintenance of limited access control areas for radioactive material processing and personnel protection.
  • Conduct of operations within established NOG Industrial Safety policies and OSHA regulations, including performance to established safety and injury goals.
  • Maintain required state, federal, and agency laboratory certifications and qualifications.
  • Establish and maintain a Quality Assurance program that meets all customer requirements and nuclear standards, ensuring a high level of confidence in the accuracy, reliability, and compliance of laboratory results and products.
  • Maintain information protocol within established procedures and policies for Confidential and Secret information.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects across diverse customers, ensuring effective communication, schedule adherence, budget compliance, and successful project performance.
  • Oversee day-to-day operational management including ensuing the availability of required equipment and supplies, and scheduling of resources and overtime.
  • Establish and execute laboratory equipment capital plans within established budgets.
  • Drive continuous improvement of laboratory services and products to enhance competitiveness and attract new business and/or customers.
  • Engage and participate with Business Development personnel to market laboratory services and products to new markets and customers such as our capability in nuclear material evaluation and selection, nuclear fuel characterization and testing, hot cell facility and operation, development and fabrication of isotope sources, etc.
  • Prepare proposals in response to solicitations from both within company and outside customers including:
    • Preparing in-house cost estimates including applying appropriate labor rates and G&A.
    • Identifying and securing quotes from prospective outsourced suppliers.
    • Securing review and approval from company legal counsel of proposed terms & conditions.
    • Conducting and securing upper management reviews and approvals in accordance with company policies.
    • Transmittal of final proposal to customer.
    • Coordinating with Finance personnel on appropriate booking and establishment of cost charging accounts for awarded scopes.
  • Manage overall operational cost to adhere to cost center budget.
  • Oversee overall NME P&L performance to ensure achievement of established revenue and operating income goals.
  • Supervise and assign NME personnel's daily workloads.


Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or physics is required.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of leadership/supervisory experience.
    • Leadership experience includes positions that involve providing direction to others and schedule as well as responsibility that can be demonstrated by an ability to take the initiative, adhere to deadlines, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a nuclear field and laboratory operation is required.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in nuclear materials or radiochemistry is preferred.

Pay: $114,000.00 - $180,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $114,000.00 and $180,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
