Department Overview

The Market Segment Strategy Group ("MSSG") supports the Commercial Banking Centres ("CBCs") on cash flow and other complex lending transactions in order to grow market share in the greater than $5 million loan segment. In addition, MSSG has created industry advisors who specialize in certain key industries.

Job Description

Reporting to the AVP, Market Segment Strategy, the National Industry Lead, Defense Industry is responsible for leading the Business Bank's national strategy and market development efforts within Canada's defense sector. Acting as the primary subject matter expert, this role will support Commercial Banking Centres (CBCs) and Commercial National Accounts (CNA) in identifying growth opportunities, deepening client relationships, mitigating industry-specific risks, and increasing TD's market share across the defense ecosystem.

This position will have the following key responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

Industry Strategy & Portfolio Growth

  • Develop, execute and continuously refine TD's national defense industry strategy, identifying priority sectors, market opportunities and emerging trends across the defense ecosystem.
  • Support TD's strategic participation in Canada's growing defense, aerospace, cybersecurity and dual-use technology sectors, aligning industry opportunities with evolving government defense spending priorities and supply chain investments.
  • Partner with Commercial Credit Risk Management, TDS and Product Groups to establish industry-specific risk appetite, lending frameworks and portfolio growth objectives.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, market penetration and competitive positioning, recommending actions to accelerate profitable growth while maintaining prudent risk management.

Client and Business Development

  • Support frontline sales teams in originating, structuring and executing complex lending and treasury opportunities within the Defense sector.
  • Collaborate with CBCs, CNA and business partners to develop targeted business development strategies for key clients, prospects and centres of influence.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen relationships across defense manufacturers, technology firms, aerospace companies, cybersecurity providers, defense contractors and strategic suppliers.

Government & Industry Engagement

  • Act as TD's primary representative within the Canadian defense ecosystem, fostering relationships with government agencies, industry associations, procurement authorities, defense primes and key market participants.
  • Support the development and utilization of government-backed financing solutions, guarantee programs and export-related initiatives relevant to the defense sector.
  • Monitor changes in government procurement policies, defense spending programs, export controls and regulatory developments, assessing implications for clients and TD's portfolio.

Thought Leadership & Industry Expertise

  • Provide regular market intelligence and industry insights to senior leadership, field and risk partners.
  • Develop industry-specific content, training programs and sales tools to enhance the organization's understanding of defense market opportunities and risks.
  • Serve as the trusted advisor for defense industry matters, supporting credit approvals, client strategies and complex transaction discussions across the Bank.

Internal Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Influence and align multiple stakeholders across commercial banking, risk, product, treasury management and capital markets to deliver industry solutions.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives designed to enhance TD's capabilities and market presence within Canada's defense sector.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience within the defense, aerospace, government contracting, or related sectors, with a strong understanding of industry dynamics and procurement processes.
  • Commercial banking, corporate finance, business development and relationship management experience would be considered an asset
  • Strong knowledge of government procurement frameworks, defense contracting structures, export controls, security requirements and government financing programs.
  • Experience engaging with senior executives, government stakeholders, industry associations and strategic partners.
  • Proven ability to influence across matrix organizations and lead initiatives
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA, professional designation or relevant industry credentials considered an asset.
  • Government of Canada security clearance
  • Ability to travel nationally and represent TD at client meetings, conferences and industry events.
