Full Job Description
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, supervise the day-to-day operations and provides technical support to Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology/Virology laboratories. Oversee quality assurance and quality control functions for the Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology/Virology laboratories. Assist in establishing and validating new tests as required for the Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology/Virology laboratories. Assist in technical consultation to clinicians, researchers and campus research community. Assist with the identification of laboratory tests to support clinical needs, review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols. Foster and maintain professional relationships with collaborators and researchers. Work with the R&D Supervisor on research projects.

  • Experience working in a human or veterinary clinical diagnostic Microbiology, Parasitology, or Immunology/Virology lab.
  • Experience with monitoring QA/QC programs.
  • Experience supervising or working in a lead role with technical staff.
  • Supervisory skills to recruit, hire, train, coach, evaluate, assign tasks, motivate employees, and build staff morale.
  • Skills to implement new test methodology, including validation for a Microbiology, Parasitology, and/or Immunology/Virology lab.
  • Skills to prioritize workload, manage, determine staffing, and meet deadlines for multiple projects while maintaining quality.
  • Skills to develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, follow existing laboratory protocols/procedures and to modify existing procedures where necessary to meet changing laboratory needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with assessing laboratory equipment, performing calibrations and minor repairs.
  • Experience supporting Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and related technical procedures in a hospital or veterinary clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience developing new revenue streams and/or implementing business development programs for a diagnostic laboratory.
  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and diplomacy to interact with a diverse group of people: faculty, clients, residents, researchers, students, and staff regarding samples.

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment
