Job Description
The night shift Craft Manager is the most senior Operations position and responsible for leading all Craft supervisors. They are responsible and accountale for shpyard productivity of the Norfolk Maritime trades assigned to night shift. All night shift assigned craft supervisors will report to the night shift Craft Manager. The Craft Manager is expected to provide direction, set expectations and hold his direct reports accountable as necessary to ensure that BAE NMS achieves productivity goals with a primary focus on Safety and Quality. Ensuring that the work force is executing work IAW with safety, cost and schedule goals. Strong communications skils are required, both verbal and written. Ability to lead and work colaberatively with direct reports to create probelm solving capabilities. Ensuring to report road blocks or issues clearly. The Craft Manager is expected to be involved in all phases of project performance and personnel related functions, including but not limited to, project planning and execution, budgeting, the hiring and supervision of union and non-union employees, terminations/reorganizations, and employee promotions and demotions. The Craft Manager also is responsible for ensuring that employees comply with Company policies and procedures, and the requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), as applicable.
Some of the key Craft Manager duties and responsibilities include:
• Share the BAE NMS Operations vision while setting expectations that all Shops align with company goals for Safety, Quality and Productivity.
• Reviewing project schedules and budgets during the planning phase.
• Allocating personnel and resources to efficiently support all contracts (including shift work). Being able to pivot and make adjustments with personnel based on condition changes as required.
• Overseeing and monitoring schedule performance, including review of ongoing and upcoming projects, investigation of late activities, and assistance with project supervision and the development of practical solutions all issues preventing timely and effective project completion.
• Monitoring and evaluating project budget performance, including review of ongoing and upcoming projects, the development of productivity enhancements, and the investigation of over-budget items.
• Monitoring productivity across all shifts, including the amount and type of work assigned, as well as the quality and quantity of work accomplished.
• Overseeing personnel-related functions, including the hiring and supervision of journeymen trades, and unskilled trades, performance management, terminations, reorganizations, promotions and demotions.
• Ensuring that employees understand and adhere to company policies.
• Managing the neccessary skilled trade training employees in the areas of technical knowledge, safety, environmental and communication. Ensuring that skills matrixes are maintianed for each night shift employee.
• Investigating new technologies to improve the Company's capabilities and productivity.
• Ensuring that requirements of the labor agreement are properly enforced.
• Representing the Company in labor relations matters within the shop.
Required Skills and Education
Minimum education requirements (some positions require a high school or equivalent degree, some positions require a Bachelor's degree or years of experience in lieu of a degree);
• Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in the relevant industry or field;
• Demonstrated technical knowledge in the relevant industry or field;
• Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, supervise and direct project completion;
• Ability to use discretion and judgment in making operations and personnel decisions;
• Proficient computer skills required including experience with Microsoft Office programs and similar software.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Skills and Education
The Night Shift Craft Manager position is a non-bargaining position. Please note that this specific Craft Manager position is the Senior Operations leader on night shift and may have additional or different skills, responsibilities, and qualifications associated with leading and prioritizing all night shift trade supervisors. The Company also may, in its discretion, modify the skills, responsibilities, and qualifications for Craft Managers at any time.
