Full Job Description
Job Title: Metallurgist - Forging Plant

Location: CMCO - Longview, Texas

Position Overview: The Metallurgist is responsible for managing metallurgical and metrology functions within forging operations, including oversight of the metallurgical laboratory, heat treatment processes, and calibration of measurement equipment. This role ensures forged products meet customer specifications, mechanical property requirements, and applicable quality standards through effective process control, testing, analysis, and continuous improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Oversee daily metallurgical and Metrology activities in the forging plant
• Manage and supervise the metallurgical laboratory, including testing, inspection, metrology/calibration, and reporting
• Take responsibility for heat treatment operations, management of recipes, annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering, and stress relieving requirements
• Develop, monitor, and optimize heat treatment cycles for various grades of steel and alloy materials
• Review customer specifications, industry standards, and internal quality requirements to ensure compliance
• Interpret metallurgical test results including microstructure evaluation, hardness testing, tensile testing, Charpy testing, and other mechanical/property verifications
• Investigate non-conformances, heat treatment failures, forging defects, and metallurgical issues; identify root causes and implement corrective actions
• Work closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams to improve forging and heat treatment processes
• Ensure calibration and proper operation of all measuring devices, laboratory and heat treatment equipment
• Maintain metallurgical records, furnace charts, test reports, and material certifications
• Support audits, customer visits, and technical reviews
• Train heat treat department on metallurgical and heat treatment requirements
• Assist in new product development, material selection, and process qualifications
• Responsible for supporting 3 shifts, 5-6-day production process
• Data/testing for off shifts and weekends as needed
• Ensure compliance with safety, environments, and quality management systems

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities:
• Experience in a forging environment
• Knowledge of destructive and non-destructive testing requirements
• Familiarity with furnace temperature uniformity surveys, system accuracy, testing, and process validation
• Experience with continuous improvement and root cause analysis tools

Physical Demands / Environmental Conditions

Combination of office and production floor environment.

Normal office conditions. Office is located in a two-story building. Job demands may require long periods of sitting, telephone work and/or computer work, as well as interaction with other people. Normal office conditions include walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, lifting, driving and/or traveling.

Moderate exposure to shop conditions, which are variable depending on the task assigned, but are generally dirty. Is subject to shop noise. Involves extensive standing and walking. Skin and eyes are subject to drying and irritating fumes, vapors and solutions controlled to OSHA standards. Works both in and out of doors, normally indoors, with sometimes dusty or confining work areas when in the shop/lab.
