Full Job Description
Medical Laboratory Technologist 1 Location: PHO Corporate Office & Toronto Laboratory, 661 University Avenue, Toronto, ON Department: Bacteriology, Environmental testing This posting is to fill a current vacancy. The Role: To perform testing and provide accurate and timely reporting of clinical and environmental laboratory tests as part of a team of laboratory professionals, within Public Health Ontario's (PHO's) quality policies and technical procedures and the regulatory and accreditation requirements within their scope of work. Key Responsibilities- • Be competent to perform laboratory activities, work in accordance with the laboratory's management system and conducts standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures for the isolation, quantification, identification, molecular testing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of clinically significant bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses and associated antibodies as applicable. • Carries out testing as outlined in the method using the established quality assurance and control procedures, including internal and external proficiency testing to ensure quality outcomes. • Reports on and relays results to specimen submitters, including health care providers and other parties as required, accurately, clearly, unambiguously and objectively within acceptable turnaround time (TAT) as published by PHO's laboratory and required timeframes outlined in applicable legislation. • Authorizes the release of laboratory test results and discusses test results with clients within the restriction of College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario regulations. • Ensures specimens are handled and stored appropriately to protect the integrity of the test and the interests of the laboratory and the customer. • Performs review of daily QC materials, evaluates the significance of deviations and take appropriate actions to resolve any discrepancies when QC results fall outside the acceptable range(s). • Maintains and monitors equipment and inventory of supplies to ensure operability and adequate supply. • Provides direction and guidance to Laboratory Attendants responsible for supporting Medical Laboratory Technologists and senior staff and assists with training/retraining staff. • Provides technical assistance to Senior Technologists and Operational Lead in carrying out testing and/or special projects. • Performs activities to support the laboratory's Quality Management Program including those that support accreditation and regulatory requirements. • Maintains privacy and confidentiality as outlined by PHO's corporate policies. • Performs laboratory activities impartially, discloses any conflicts of interest and does not allow commercial, financial or other pressures to compromise their work or impartiality. • Performs other duties or projects as assigned. Knowledge and Skills- • Knowledge of and the ability to perform medical /environmental laboratory techniques/ • procedures, laboratory safety practices and utilize laboratory equipment in the conduct of standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures. • Knowledge of computer applications to utilize standard and laboratory information systems. • Knowledge of accreditation and regulatory requirements that impact the scope of testing to ensure compliance in the conduct of laboratory testing. • Knowledge of PHO policies, protocols, including PHO's code of conduct; Ensures confidentiality is maintained when releasing test results and during discussions with clients. Education and Experience- • Certification in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO). • Valid Human Pathogens and Toxins Act security clearance may be required when working in the CL3 Laboratory. Attributes and Competencies- • Good oral and written communication skills: in order to write standard operating procedures and complete records. • Good interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and to liaise with laboratory staff and sample submitters, including health care providers, to relay laboratory test results and other information. • May be required to lift up to 10 kg. • May be required to work within a biological safety cabinet/fume hood. • Physical coordination and manual dexterity in the use of keyboard, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and perform testing of specimens. • May be required to perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting. • May be required to stand or sit for the period of one shift. • Requires physical activity such as walking, lifting, stretching, and bending. • May be required to work rotational shifts as scheduled.
