Job Description Summary

The Medical Director, Alliance System of Care provides physician leadership, clinical oversight, and strategic direction for rehabilitation services delivered through Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab) partnerships with affiliated health systems. In collaboration with administrative and operational leaders, this role is responsible for advancing high-quality, evidence-based rehabilitation care, driving innovation, and ensuring seamless integration of services across the continuum of care.

The Medical Director serves as a practicing SRAlab attending physician and works closely with alliance hospital leadership, service line partners, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure excellent patient outcomes, regulatory compliance, and programmatic growth. This role shares accountability for quality, safety, utilization, financial stewardship, and strategic development of alliance-based rehabilitation services.

Job Description

Medical and Clinical Leadership

  • Provides physician leadership and clinical oversight for rehabilitation services delivered within the Alliance System of Care.
  • Serves as a practicing attending physician, ensuring appropriateness, effectiveness, and coordination of medical and interdisciplinary treatment plans.
  • Oversees physician coverage models to meet patient care needs across alliance sites.
  • Ensures high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care environments with strong outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • Collaborates with nursing and allied health leadership to resolve complex medical and operational issues.

Program Development and Operations

  • Shares responsibility with administrative leaders for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating alliance programs.
  • Oversees referral relationships, patient access, and volume growth in alignment with SRAlab standards.
  • Drives innovation in rehabilitation programming, throughput, and care delivery models.
  • Supports development and monitoring of key performance indicators, including quality, safety, utilization, regulatory, and financial metrics.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and develops corrective action plans as needed.

Strategic and Academic Collaboration

  • Collaborates with acute care service line leaders, academic partners, and institutional stakeholders to advance alliance goals.
  • Participates in medical staff committees and organizational initiatives as appropriate.
  • Supports medical education activities, including teaching, mentoring, and program evaluation, where applicable.
  • Maintains strong relationships with academic institutions, professional organizations, and referral sources.
  • Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities
  • Conducts or supports annual medical performance evaluations for alliance physicians.
  • Assesses physician manpower needs and supports recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Participates in budgeting and financial oversight in partnership with operational leaders.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in the best interest of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab SVP, Chief Clinical Officer
  • Maintains matrix or dotted-line reporting relationships to alliance hospital leadership

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice medicine in the applicable state.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Board Certified or Board Eligible.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, program development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to analyze and act on clinical, operational, and financial performance data.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice, innovation, and patient-centered care.

Working Conditions
