Job Description
The Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, development, and certification support of aircraft Environmental Control Systems (ECS) and related mechanical systems. This role provides technical leadership for system design, obsolescence management, supplier coordination, and engineering analysis while ensuring compliance with regulatory, customer, and company requirements. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and program stakeholders to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform design and analysis of aircraft Environmental Control Systems (ECS), including air conditioning, air distribution, ventilation, cabin pressure control, equipment cooling, cargo fire protection, ice/rain protection, oxygen systems, pneumatics, and nitrogen generating systems.
- Develop and implement solutions for component obsolescence affecting suppliers and aircraft type design.
- Review, approve, and validate engineering analyses and technical documentation.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
- Collaborate with project engineers, stress analysts, Materials & Processes (M&P), suppliers, procurement, and certification teams.
- Coordinate with cross-functional engineering groups to ensure technical and program requirements are achieved.
- Lead technical discussions and represent the engineering team during supplier interactions.
- Support design release activities, supplier-driven changes, tooling issues, and certification requirements.
- Develop and improve analytical methods, engineering processes, and best practices to enhance quality and efficiency.
- Utilize engineering tools such as CATIA V5, ENOVIA, PDM, STEALTH, QMAP, REDARS, ETAC, ESPEC, Bridge, and related industry applications.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in aircraft Environmental Control Systems analysis and design, including ATA 21, ATA 26, ATA 30, ATA 36, Oxygen Systems, fluid mechanics, systems engineering, and/or computational fluid dynamics.
- 5+ years of experience in a commercial aircraft environment.
- Experience with 2D and 3D design methodologies, including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with design release processes, engineering policies and procedures, certification activities, tooling issues, and supplier-driven changes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of design engineering experience in a commercial aircraft environment.
- Experience supporting Boeing 7-Series and Douglas aircraft programs.
- 5+ years of experience supporting production, sub-components, or spares.
- Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience interacting directly with suppliers and external stakeholders.
Education / Experience
Bachelor's degree and typically 5+ years of experience in an engineering classification, or a Master's degree with typically 3+ years of experience, or a PhD with related engineering experience. Senior-level candidates
