What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Mechanical, I&C, or Structural Engineer to join the Engineering Services Division, supporting the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Facilities Operations Engineering Group (ES-LFO). You will be working as part of a system engineering team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at the LANSCE accelerator and supporting facilities. Specific tasks will include facility and system assessments, maintenance support, field walk downs, developing technical baseline documentation, outage support, design development and review, and facility system interface.

This will require interfacing and coordinating with all stakeholders including customers, operations, maintenance, other engineering disciplines, subcontractors and equipment suppliers. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working close to the field, collaborating with operations and maintenance teams, and applying sound engineering judgment to real-world infrastructure challenges - all in support of a national mission.
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

The successful candidate will perform the following (list is not all-inclusive):
  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) process in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management
  • Assess, maintain, and upgrade facility systems
  • Lead the development and review of engineering and designs for new and replacement equipment
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)

Additional responsibilities at the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 Level:
  • Evaluate complex facility and system challenges, identify risks, and develop creative solutions
  • Lead technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and drive process improvements
  • Manage long-term operational and strategic planning for facility reinvestment and asset management


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements :

  • Combined experience related to the engineering design and/or maintenance of facility system, structures and components such as water systems, HVAC, fire protection, compressed air, vacuum and structural support
  • Experience in system and equipment installation and maintenance in accordance with National Codes and Standards such as the IBC, IEBC, ASCE, ASME, ASHRAE and NFPA
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanical or structural engineering principles, design guides and relevant standards
  • Knowledge of facility and system interfaces
  • Solid skills in verbal and written communication


Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3:
  • In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Progressive combined experience related to the design, installation, and maintenance of facility electrical system, structures and components
  • In-depth knowledge of integrated system and maintenance support, and appropriate standards
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement interdisciplinary design and/or maintenance solutions to complex facility and equipment installations
  • Demonstrated ability for self-directed work, planning, and prioritization
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior personnel
Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and a minimum three (3) years of practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and a minimum six (6) years practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) is desirable at the Engineer 2 level
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable at the Engineer 3 level
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to design and maintenance implementation

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
