AOT-MDE is a group of engineers, designers and technicians that primarily support the mechanical maintenance, repair and upgrades to the LANSCE accelerator. The group also provides R&D mechanical engineering support to a wide variety of programs at LANSCE, across LANL and for outside customers. This job is posted at duel level, with the level granted to the successful candidate to be dependent on relevant education, skills and experience.

Seeking a strongly self-motivated Mechanical Engineer to support the work described above and to specifically be a member of the Water Team. This team is responsible for the water cooling systems of all components and structures along the LANSCE accelerator. The team's routine work involves maintenance, repair and replacement of all water system components: Pumps, heat exchangers, instrumentation, piping, valves, etc. As a Mechanical Engineer within this team, you will provide engineering support to all team activity while participating in the implementation of repairs and installations.

As an R&D Engineer you will also be called upon to support other ongoing work within MDE. This will be design and analysis of structural or thermohydraulic projects, often leading to experimental validation.

This position involves supporting LANSCE 24-hour, 7-day per week beam operations, which will involve work at odd hours (when required) and on-call duties. Must be willing to work overtime occasionally and serve on call to support 24/7 accelerator operation and maintenance.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D 2 Engineer ($106,400 - $176,000)
  • Proven track record of contributing to high-impact R&D projects through design, analysis, prototyping, fabrication and documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings drafted utilizing ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Experience with CAD and CAM software, specifically SolidWorks.
  • Work successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
  • Willingness and ability to work with the team hands on performing repairs and maintenance along the LANSCE beam line.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and a commitment to doing work safely and securely.
  • Be capable and willing to work in radiation areas while adhering to ALARA principles.
  • A fundamental knowledge and experience with water cooling system design and operation
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.
R&D 3 Engineer ($128,000 - $215,900)
In addition to the above:
  • An advanced knowledge and experience with water cooling system design and operation.
  • Knowledge and experience with water chemistry and its maintenance and control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing and machining techniques and practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
Education/Experience R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience R&D Engineer 3: Position requires a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of linear accelerator operation, configuration and components.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Experience with the use of high-powered computational analysis tools such as Ansys Fluent.
  • Knowledgeable of all types of water system equipment and practices.
  • Ability and willingness to provide engineering support to other teams in the group supporting the accelerator: Mechanical, Vacuum and Diagnostics.
  • Possess active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
