About the Role:

The Mechanical Circulatory Support Coordinator will work under the direction of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager and the ECMO Medical Directors to develop, organize, and apply staff and program efforts. The MCS Coordinator will also direct clinical and didactic theories, including high-fidelity multi-disciplinary simulations and quality improvement projects as appropriate. The MCS Coordinator will develop and coordinate staff competency programs as required by mechanical support systems (ECMO, VAD, Plasma Exchange, Dialysis Program or any other mechanical support system). This will also include educational support for other healthcare team members (Physicians, Nurses, respiratory care, and others).

The Mechanical Circulatory Support Coordinator will coordinate all clinical, operational, training, and competency, including ECPR and ECMO transport, and have extensive experience in the use of Mechanical support simulation in order to guide the educational needs of all staff involved. The MCS Coordinator will also assist the Mechanical Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager and ECMO Medical Directors in coordinating all education and quality improvement activities related to the mechanical support programs. The MCS Coordinator will also provide bedside clinical pump coverage or priming coverage as necessary. The MCS Coordinator reports directly to the Mechanical Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager.

At least a minimum of five (5) years of ECMO or other mechanical circulatory support experience .

Ability to effectively speak to a variety of audiences of various sizes regarding mechanical support systems.
Professional and scientific writing skills for literature contributions, policy, procedure, protocol, guideline experience, development, and implementation.
Use critical thinking skills for complex clinical and technological environments.
Experience in public speaking and providing presentations.
General office equipment skills (calculator, copy machines, fax).

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse (Required) Or
Registered Respiratory Therapist (Required)

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Patient Care
  • Function as an administrative resource for all aspects of patient care delivery related to mechanical support patients when the Mechanical Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager is not available.
  • Function as the clinical resource for patient care issues for the ECMO/VAD Specialists, as it relates to mechanical support patients, in collaboration with the ECMO/VAD providers and Cardiovascular Perfusionists as appropriate
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Coordinator/Unit Manager to resolve complex patient care delivery issues.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to meeting patient care needs.
  • Meet regularly with the Mechanical Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager to review patient care delivery.
  • Support clinical research activities by following established protocols, collect data, and assist other ECMO specialists to doing the same.
  • Provide education and department updates to all ECMO specialist and critical care staff.
  • Perform as an ECMO Specialist or Primer as needed.

Training and Education
  • Assist with the development of all mechanical support training courses, including didactic lectures, animal lab training, and oversight of the bedside preceptor training program.
  • Organize and implement water drills/simulation sessions quarterly or as needed for re-training of the ECMO Specialists.
  • Assist the ECMO and VAD Program Manager with the maintenance of policies, publications, and mechanical support clinical protocols.
  • Assist the Mechanical Circulatory Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager with developing and implementing all ECMO specialist training courses, physician training courses, and ECMO conferences.
  • Provide input to unit manager(s) for employee performance evaluations related to mechanical circulatory support
  • Assess the need for educational sessions on mechanical support for individual units as needed and coordinate educational offerings

Logistics
  • Assist with bed-side billing for ECMO/VAD patients as needed and when the Mechanical Support Manager or ECMO and VAD Program Manager is not available
  • Provide input into the evaluation process of the ECMO Specialists concerning their role on the ECMO team for any mechanical circulatory support system.
  • Determine clinical rotations and schedules for the ECMO Specialists in coordination with the managers of their home unit and for the critical care units.
  • Role model expertise in communication through collaboration with staff, patients/families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills by adapting techniques for specific situations.
  • Manage conflict effectively by facilitating productive communication.
  • Serve as a liaison to promote positive interdepartmental relationships.

Evaluation
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement within the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program.
  • Assist with the organization, implementation, and evaluation of the performance improvement plan for the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program
  • Provide performance feedback in a constructive manner; assisting unit leadership to provide effective feedback.

Professional Practice/Research
  • Participate in Shared Leadership
  • Ensure Mechanical Circulatory Support practice is based on evidence of best practice.
  • Accountable to participate in the Division of Nursing and Respiratory Therapy's Performance Improvement process (division or unit level).
  • Participate in community activities

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
