Position Summary

As a Managing Director, Underwriting - Specialty Casualty Reinsurance at Navigators Re, a brand of The Hartford, you will be a lead underwriter for the Specialty Casualty treaty portfolio. You will be responsible to drive profitable growth with new and established partnerships, assist with managing the portfolio's performance, and help provide insights and perspective with shaping the business strategy.

You will underwrite complex new and renewal business, serve as a senior technical resource, and partner with Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Operations, and Underwriting leadership to support sound risk selection, pricing, and execution, all with a bottom line focus.

This role requires strong technical underwriting expertise, portfolio management discipline, market credibility, and the ability to influence outcomes across internal and external partners.
  • This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the listed office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday), subject to business needs.
  • Travel may be required to support broker, cedent, market, and internal/external business priorities.


Responsibilities
  • Manage the profitability, growth, and overall performance of an assigned Specialty Casualty treaty portfolio.
  • Underwrite complex new and renewal treaty business, including referrals, special acceptances, terms, conditions, and documented underwriting workups.
  • Monitor portfolio results, rate adequacy, exposure concentrations, retention, and loss trends; recommend actions to improve performance.
  • Use underwriting, actuarial, financial, and market insights to inform risk selection, pricing, portfolio strategy, and growth opportunities.
  • Serve as a referral authority and technical resource for complex underwriting decisions, including structure, terms, conditions, and coverage solutions.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines and authority protocols with strong quality, compliance, and documentation standards.
  • Build and deepen strategic broker and cedent relationships; provide responsive service on proposals, authorizations, special acceptances, and renewals.
  • Maintain strong market awareness, including industry developments, competitor activity, and emerging risks that may affect underwriting strategy.
  • Partner with Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Operations, and underwriting leadership to align portfolio actions with business strategy and risk appetite.
  • Coach and mentor junior underwriters by providing technical guidance, referral support, and practical feedback.
  • Be a Team player, always willing to collaborate, assist and drive results that will position the Specialty Casualty Portfolio in a way for long-term stability and success that is good for the Division, Nav Re platform and The Hartford


Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of reinsurance underwriting experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, with experience analyzing profitability, rate adequacy, exposure management, and risk selection.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of Casualty lines; Professional Liability, Management Liability, or Transactional Liability experience is a plus.
  • Ability to influence underwriting strategy, portfolio decisions, and business outcomes through sound judgment and market insight.
  • Strong communication, presentation, sales, and negotiation skills with brokers, cedents, executives, and business partners.
  • Established credibility in the broker and reinsurance marketplace, with strong relationship-building and business development skills.
  • Ability to partner across Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Operations, and underwriting leadership to drive results.
  • Strategic, analytical, organized, and accountable, with strong attention to detail and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel as needed.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with treaty reinsurance, portfolio analytics, pricing tools, aggregate exposure management, and underwriting governance.
  • Knowledge of Professional Liability, Management Liability, Transactional Liability, or adjacent specialty casualty exposures.
  • FCAS, CPCU, ARe, RPLU, or related designation preferred.
  • Experience using underwriting data, technology, or analytics tools to improve pricing, productivity, or portfolio decisions.


Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$185,920 - $278,880
