Assistant Investment Analyst - Municipal Credit Research

Position Summary

HIMCO (The Hartford Investment Management Company) is seeking an Assistant Investment Analyst to join the Municipal Credit Research team. This individual will work closely with senior members of the team to identify, analyze, and monitor investment opportunities across the municipal bond market. The role combines fundamental credit analysis, relative value analysis, and the study of economic, political, and public policy developments that influence credit quality and market performance.

This position is well suited for a highly curious, self-motivated individual who is passionate about investing and the intersection of public policy and financial markets. The ideal candidate is eager to develop investment views, challenge assumptions, explore new analytical approaches, embrace AI and workflow automation, and contribute meaningfully to a collaborative research platform.

Job Duties
  • Assist in the fundamental credit research process to evaluate investment opportunities and monitor existing municipal bond holdings
  • Analyze issuer financial statements, budgets, news alerts, economic trends, and political and public policy developments across a variety of municipal sectors
  • Build, maintain, and enhance financial models and analytical tools used to assess credit quality and relative value
  • Conduct independent research on emerging credit themes, market developments, and investment opportunities
  • Participate in issuer meetings, industry conferences, rating agency discussions, and investor calls
  • Assist in preparing investment recommendations, credit opinions, and presentations for portfolio managers and other key stakeholders
  • Identify opportunities to improve research processes, data management, analytical frameworks, and workflow efficiency, especially via AI and workflow automation
  • Collaborate with analysts across sectors and contribute to broader research initiatives within Public Credit Research
  • Network with key stakeholders across the municipal bond market, including issuers, rating agency analysts, and sell side professionals


Technical / Functional Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong academic background with an undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Public Policy, Political Science, Government or a related field
  • 0-2+ years of relevant experience in credit research, fixed income investing, public finance, government, or economic research
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity in investing, public policy, financial analysis, and economics, and the ability to synthesize information from across these disciplines
  • Understanding of financial statements, accounting concepts, and financial modeling
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills coupled with the ability to think critically and challenge conventional viewpoints
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; experience with AI and workflow automation applications such as CoPilot, Visual Studio Code, and Power Automate a plus
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Self-starter who takes ownership of projects and pursues opportunities with limited direction
  • Team-oriented individual who welcomes debate, values diverse perspectives, and contributes positively to an intellectually rigorous investment environment
  • Progress toward or willingness to pursue the CFA designation a plus

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$80,062 - $94,938
