PayPal, Inc. seeks Manager, Software Engineering in San Jose, CA
Job Duties: Manage multiple concurrent projects through direct reports and, where needed, directly oversee individual software development initiatives. Ensure project delivery through effective oversight of resources, cost, methods, and staffing. Guide the team in building robust, scalable automated testing frameworks tailored for new AI-based products, ensuring end-to-end coverage and efficiency in quality validation. Identify and implement continuous improvements to streamline PayPal's product development and testing lifecycle, enhancing productivity and reducing time-to-market. Lead and inspire a high-performing team of test engineers. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative work environment that supports professional growth and technical excellence. Ensure the reliability, performance, and functional accuracy of PayPal's products through rigorous testing strategies, validation processes, and test automation. Oversee the planning, execution, and successful delivery of testing initiatives. Ensure alignment with defined quality standards, regulatory requirements, and delivery timelines. Work closely with engineering teams, product managers, and business stakeholders to align testing strategies with product goals and roadmap priorities. Demonstrate strong analytical thinking and perseverance in addressing complex, ambiguous technical challenges. Guide the team through problem resolution with a focus on long-term solutions. Lead efforts to resolve highly complex or unique technical scenarios. Contribute to the development of future concepts, products, and technologies that have significant business impact. Lead a team of up to 12 team members including Sr. Software Engineers and Software Engineers. Partial telecommuting permitted from within a commutable distance.
Minimum Requirements: Master's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field, plus five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field plus eight years of progressively responsible experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
Special Skill Requirements:
1. Experience designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-scale software test automation frameworks using Object-Oriented Design, Java and Javascript/Typescript (5 years)
2. Experience leading end-to-end quality engineering and certification efforts for large-scale, customer-facing and backend distributed systems. (5 years)
3. Experience building and scaling UI and API automation frameworks using Playwright (5 Years)
4. Experience defining and executing test strategies, test plans, and test cases across functional, integration, and end-to-end testing layers. (5 Years)
5. Experience leveraging AI/GenAI (GPT, Claude, Gemini) to automate test case generation, test data generation, and defect analysis (1 Year)
6. Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Harness to enable continuous testing and reporting (5 Years)
7. Experience collaborating with product, engineering, and cross-functional teams to define test strategies and release readiness (5 Years)
8. Experience testing and validating RESTful APIs and microservices architectures using Postman, Rest-Assured, and CA DevTest (5 Years)
9. Experience working with relational databases and validating data integrity across application and backend layers. (5 Years)
10. Experience defining coding standards, automation best practices, and conducting code reviews to improve quality and maintainability (5 years)
11. Experience developing Node.js utilities and internal tools to support secure and scalable testing workflows (5 Years)
12. Experience working with Git-based source control, Jira defect tracking, and enterprise-scale QA tooling (5 Years)
13. Experience collaborating with product, engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure quality throughout the software development lifecycle. (5 Years)
14. Experience leading and coordinating multiple concurrent engineering initiatives across geographically distributed teams. (5 Years)
15. Experience designing and implementing Generative AI-driven test automation solutions using large language models (LLMs) to automatically generate test cases, test data, and defect summaries. (2 Years)
16. Experience integrating multiple LLM platforms (OpenAI GPT models, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude) into enterprise automation frameworks to improve test coverage and execution efficiency. (2 Years)
17. Experience applying Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable contextual interaction between AI agents and existing test automation systems. (1 Year)
18. Experience designing and deploying AI sub-agents and intelligent workflows to orchestrate Web and API test execution across complex distributed systems. (1 Year)
19. Experience combining UI, API, and data-layer automation into a unified framework for enterprise-scale applications. (3 Years)
20. Experience architecting scalable, reusable automation frameworks that support asynchronous execution, dependency-aware test flows, and cross-platform integrations. (2 Years)
21. Experience researching and integrating GraphQL interfaces with AI-driven test automation frameworks to enable efficient, flexible access to backend services. (1 Year)
22. Experience providing technical leadership and hands-on architecture guidance for AI-driven automation initiatives while managing multiple concurrent engineering programs. (1 year)
23. Experience defining enterprise-wide AI adoption strategies for quality engineering, including governance, best practices, and risk mitigation. (1 year)
Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:
The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is:
Primary Location | Pay Range:
San Jose, California | Salary: $229,481.00-300,500.00 per annum. 40 hours per week; M-F, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
