Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Priority Initiatives & Client Development, and based in Vancouver, the Manager, Profile & Client Development plays a key role in advancing the Firm's growth, market visibility, and client engagement objectives. The Manager develops and delivers strategic business development and profile-raising initiatives, with a significant focus on planning and delivering high-quality client events and programs. Combining strategic thinking with hands-on execution, the Manager works closely with the Director, Vancouver Office Managing Partner, and practice leaders to support go-to-market strategies, strengthen client relationships, and deliver high-impact initiatives that contribute to the Firm's profile and growth. The role also has responsibility for managing one direct report.

Responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning & Market Positioning
  • Support the development and execution of national and local business development plans, aligning efforts with firmwide strategy.
  • Utilize internal firm data, external market intelligence, and industry trends to identify client and market growth opportunities and inform recommendations.
  • Drive business development and profile-raising efforts through research and analysis.
  • Support go-to-market planning, brand positioning, and messaging for new offerings, markets, or initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives to improve ROI and recommend adjustments as needed.
  • Clearly communicate BD strategies and recommendations, adapting tone and level of detail based on audience.


2. Client Events & Programs
  • Lead the planning and delivery of client-facing events, including seminars, webinars, conferences, receptions, sponsorships, roundtables, and continuing professional development (CPD) programs.
  • Work directly with lawyers and stakeholders to develop creative and strategic event concepts that strengthen client relationships, enhance the Firm's profile, and support business development objectives.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders, vendors, and event partners to ensure seamless event delivery and a positive client experience.
  • Stay current on industry trends, event formats, venues, and client engagement opportunities to continuously enhance the Firm's event programming.


3. Client Development & Cross-Selling
  • Build and execute profile-raising strategies, client-focused initiatives, and thought leadership programs tailored to key audiences.
  • Understand and leverage firm experience and key client relationships to identify cross-selling opportunities and expand client engagements.
  • Collaborate with Client Team Leads on key account programs, facilitating collaboration, strategy execution, and lawyer engagement.
  • Prepare and support the development of RFPs and proposals by working with partners on messaging and working with the Proposal team to contribute client-specific insights, experience lists, and value-add recommendations.


4. Stakeholder Management & Collaboration
  • Act as a trusted advisor to lawyers, navigating diverse personalities and working styles to drive progress on BD goals.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Business Intelligence, Communications, Creative, CRM, Digital, Events, Proposals, and other Business Services teams, to ensure integrated support and alignment with business priorities.
  • Provide direction and context when liaising with internal teams and offer coaching or mentorship to junior colleagues when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other practice groups and BD colleagues to identify cross-selling opportunities and support firm-wide initiatives.


Role of the Manager

In addition to delivering on assigned responsibilities, Managers in the Profile & Client Development team are expected to contribute to the broader success of the team and Firm by:

1. Championing collaboration and best practice sharing: Proactively share successful approaches, templates, and learnings with peers and junior team members to support consistency and continuous improvement across the national team.

2. Driving strategic thinking: Go beyond execution by evaluating how and why things are done and identifying opportunities to enhance processes, increase impact, and recommend improvements that contribute to overall team effectiveness.

3. Mentoring and developing team members: Lead, mentor, and develop one direct report, providing coaching, guidance, and professional development while ensuring deliverables meet a high standard of quality, strategic impact, and alignment with business objectives.

4. Demonstrating ownership and initiative: Operate with a high degree of autonomy, anticipating needs, surfacing risks or roadblocks early, and taking accountability for driving initiatives forward.

Requirements

  • 8 years of marketing or business development experience, ideally in professional services.
  • Proven ability to lead BD strategies and campaigns, translating strategy into actionable plans aligned with business goals.
  • Experience planning and delivering client-facing events, webinars, conferences, sponsorships, and other relationship-building programs.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills; able to manage complex initiatives and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and stakeholder groups, adapting communication style as needed.
  • Effective communicator with excellent written and verbal skills; comfortable engaging with all levels of the organization and external contacts.
  • Strong business acumen; familiarity with corporate transactional and litigation terminology is an asset.
  • Innovative and data-driven mindset; able to identify opportunities, embrace learning, and apply digital tools and solutions.
  • Diplomatic and professional, with strong negotiation, persuasion, and relationship management abilities.
  • Client-focused, flexible, and resilient in responding to changing priorities.
  • Experience supervising and developing team members is an asset.

The target salary range for this position is $95,000 - $115,000, commensurate with the successful candidate's skills, experience, and qualifications. Dentons is committed to equitable and competitive compensation. This target range falls within our internal salary ranges, which are based on comparable roles in the external market.
