What you will be doing:

The Manager, External Communications, Business Banking is responsible for leading external communications strategies and execution that support the build and launch of Tangerine's Small Business Banking proposition. Working in close partnership with the Small Business Banking, Take to Market team and key stakeholders, this role develops and executes communications plans that support bank and product launches, business growth objectives, executive visibility, and Tangerine's reputation.

The Manager serves as the communications lead for Tangerine Business Banking, providing strategic counsel and managing all aspects of external communications, including agency & media relations, thought leadership, media materials, issues management, and reputation monitoring. The successful candidate combines strategic thinking, strong business acumen, exceptional writing skills, and a sound understanding of the media landscape to translate complex business initiatives into compelling narratives that resonate with media, stakeholders and Canadians, while reinforcing Tangerine's enterprise story and brand positioning.

The Manager, External Communications, Business Banking reports directly to the Senior Manager, External Communications & Community Investment.

  • Communications & Launch Strategy
    • Lead the development and execution of external communications strategies, specifically supporting Small Business Banking.
    • Serve as the primary communications partner to key business leads and Take to Market teams, providing strategic counsel throughout product development, launch planning and business initiatives.
    • Develop integrated communications plans that support business objectives, brand awareness, new client acquisition, reputation outcomes and broader take-to-market priorities.
    • Drive consistency of messaging across internal and external audiences by partnering with Brand, Internal Communications and business stakeholders to ensure initiatives align to Tangerine's enterprise narrative, brand positioning, growth priorities and reputation goals.
    • Identify communications opportunities and reputational risks, providing recommendations that align communications approaches to business goals and enterprise priorities.
    • Develop and execute communications materials supporting launches and strategic initiatives, including press releases, media pitches, FAQs, executive briefing materials, key messages, spokesperson preparation documents and stakeholder communications.
    • Support executive participation in launch announcements, media interviews, industry events and thought leadership opportunities.
    • Ensure communications activities are delivered on time, meet governance requirements and contribute to successful business outcomes and overall bank narrative.
  • Media Relations & Thought Leadership
    • Partner with PR agency to drive proactive media relations programs that increase awareness of Tangerine's new offerings and broader growth agenda.
    • Identify and manage media opportunities that position Tangerine's leaders as innovative voices within the small business and entrepreneur communities.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with agency partners and internal stakeholders from cross-functional business lines (Scotiabank, product, legal, compliance, etc.)
  • Issues Management & Reputation Protection
    • Lead communications support for issues management as it relates to Business Banking, including the development of FAQ messaging, internal issues notes, and media response materials.
    • Assess reputational considerations associated with new products, launches and business initiatives, providing recommendations to mitigate risk.
    • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk and enterprise stakeholders to ensure communications activities meet regulatory and governance requirements.
    • Monitor media coverage and emerging issues that may impact Tangerine's reputation, business priorities or launch activities.
  • Measurement, Reporting & Stakeholder Management
    • Develop measurement frameworks and reporting approaches to evaluate launch performance, media coverage, share of voice and communications effectiveness.
    • Provide post-launch analysis, recommendations and learnings to strengthen future communications initiatives.
    • Manage agency partners, budgets, project timelines and workback schedules associated with launch activities.
    • Build strong relationships across Tangerine and Scotiabank to drive integrated planning, stakeholder alignment and successful execution of priority initiatives.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
  • University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in external communications, public relations, media relations, corporate affairs or related disciplines.
  • Experience supporting product launches, business growth initiatives, or go-to-market strategies is strongly preferred.
  • Experience within the entrepreneurial community, financial services, fintech, small business banking or other regulated industries is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of media relations, corporate reputation and earned communications strategies.
  • Experience supporting large-scale launches, business transformation initiatives or strategic growth programs.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with experience developing executive-level and media-facing materials.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, resourcefulness and a strong understanding of the Canadian banking landscape.
  • Ability to provide strategic counsel and influence stakeholders across multiple business functions.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
