Scotiabank is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-oriented professional to join its Environmental and Social (E&S) Risk Management team in the role of Manager - Climate Risks. The Manager will report to the Director & Global Head of E&S Risk Management and support the team with its mandate to ensure the Bank is effectively managing climate-related risks consistent with the governing industry regulations, standards and best practices, and its risk appetite and business strategies.

The Manager is expected to be knowledgeable on local and international climate change risk management and disclosure regulations, standards and methodologies for the financial services industry.

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Support the team with advancing the Bank's climate risk management program. This includes, but is not limited to, enhancing frameworks, policies, processes, and tools that identify, assess, measure, manage/mitigate, monitor and/or report on the Bank's climate-related risks and impacts.
  • Integrate the identification and assessment of climate risks into the management elements of other financial and non-financial business risks, such as credit, market, liquidity, operational, strategic, compliance, and reputational risks.
  • Support the integration of climate scenario analysis and portfolio alignment results in existing risk management and business strategy processes.
  • Provide independent review and effective challenge of risk assessment results as part of the team's second line-of-defense (2LOD) oversight role/function.
  • horizon scanning and inform Senior Management of new and emerging environmental risks and opportunities, such as new climate change risk management and disclosure regulations.
  • Perform data collection and analysis in support of climate risk reporting to Senior Management. Identify climate data needs and opportunities to enhance the Bank's suite of climate change risk metrics.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of climate risk management training.
  • Produce data and information that's used in the Bank's internal and external reporting on its climate risk management elements and strategies.
  • Liaise and assist Scotiabank subsidiaries and branches with adopting and integrating enterprise-wide elements of its climate risk management program.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook, and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Champion a high-performance environment and contribute to an inclusive work environment.


Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?
  • Has an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in relevant field.
  • Has at least 3-5 years of relevant environmental (including climate change) risk management experience. Experience in a risk or audit role at a financial institution would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of climate-related risks and their potential impact on financial institutions and their stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Canadian and international climate change risk management and disclosure laws, regulations, standards, guidelines and best practices applicable to the financial sector.
  • Experience conducting climate change materiality/risk assessments would be an asset.
  • Strong communication and relationship skills with a proven track record of engaging and presenting to stakeholders.
  • Spanish language fluency would be considered an asset.
