Basic Function and Responsibilities

The Director of Managed Care Analytics (Director) is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing a strategic, data-driven approach to payer contracting and value-based care initiatives at Michigan Medicine and U-M Health. This role works closely with the Chief Contracting and Managed Care Operations Officer (CCMCOO) and the Senior Director of Managed Care Contracting and Operations to lead analytics across:
  • Payer/Insurance/TPA contracts
  • Value-based care and population health programs
  • Bundled payment arrangements
  • Contractual performance, risk metrics, and settlement analysis

As the inaugural leader of a new analytics team, the Director will drive the vision, culture, and execution of managed care analytics, aligning data insights with business strategy to support enterprise-level decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Contract Performance Analytics
  • Develop and lead analytics strategy and execution for all payer and value-based contracts, including modeling for shared savings, risk corridors, HCC scoring, and attribution logic
  • Define and track KPIs, including cost of care, utilization patterns, and performance against risk-adjusted benchmarks
  • Present insights and recommendations clearly to executive leadership, supporting contract negotiations, contract/payer escalations and payer performance reviews

Advanced Data & Reporting Capabilities
  • Extract, transform, and integrate data from systems such as Epic, Clarity, Caboodle, internal enterprise data warehouses, and vendor databases
  • Develop dashboards, visual reports, and custom analytics using tools like Power BI, Tableau, SQL, and Python or other analytics software
  • Apply advanced analytics techniques, including predictive modeling and cost forecasting
  • Develop timely dashboard that report on productivity, denials, payment yield, and settlement tracking
  • Develop payer performance report cards by product line

Team Leadership & Oversight
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage a growing analytics team
  • Provide training on payer modeling tools and analytics platforms to internal stakeholders
  • Establish and enforce quality standards for data governance, accuracy, and consistency
  • Cultivate a high-performance, mission-aligned team culture

Stakeholder Engagement & Regulatory Awareness
  • Build collaborative partnerships with clinical, operational, and financial leaders across Michigan Medicine
  • Stay current on payer regulations, industry trends, and reimbursement methodologies
  • Participate in internal meetings, strategic planning sessions, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and analytics subject matter expert within the managed care leadership team

Required Qualifications*

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Computer Information Systems, Finance, Accounting, Health Administration, or a related field required
  • Master's degree (MBA, MHA) or CPA certification strongly preferred

Experience
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive leadership in analytics, healthcare finance, or payer contracting
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in healthcare analytics, population health, or value-based care programs
  • Epic Clarity Certification
  • Strong working knowledge of data sources and tools including Epic/Clarity/Caboodle, internal data warehouses, and advanced reporting platforms

Skills and Competencies
  • Analytical: Deep experience with statistical modeling, cost analysis, and population health metrics
  • Technical: Proficiency in SQL, Excel, Access; experience with Power BI, and scripting languages such as Python or R
  • Leadership: Demonstrated success in leading teams, developing talent, and influencing cross-functional initiatives
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills tailored to audiences ranging from analysts to senior executives
  • Problem Solving: Ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights under tight timelines
  • Interpersonal: Builds trust and collaboration across diverse teams and external partners

  • Key Collaborators: Michigan Medicine Finance leadership, clinical and operational stakeholders, payer representatives, and vendor analytics teams
  • The Director will support all of UM Health localities including Michigan Medicine, UM Health West, UM Health Sparrow and UM Health CIN.
