ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Assists the department coordinator by providing clinical leadership; completes projects, advanced level clinical duties as assigned.
- Performs breast imaging and bone densitometry procedures.
- Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by the radiologist.
- Prepares the patient for procedures, providing instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
- Selects and operates imaging equipment, image capture devices and accessory devices to successfully perform procedures.
- Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
- Immobilizes patients as required for appropriate examination, explaining the need for breast compression during mammography.
- Determines exposure factors.
- Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
- Evaluates images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
- Uses radiology information systems, including PACS, completes all required records and reports, and submits images for physician review and interpretation.
- Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
- Verifies informed consent for interventional procedures as required.
- Assists radiologist and physicians during procedures, performs breast specimen radiography as assigned.
- Practices aseptic technique as necessary.
- If assigned to perform radiographer duties:
- Prepares and administers contrast media as appropriate to procedures performed;
- Performs non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures under physician supervision and in compliance with policy.
- Performs surgical and portable radiographic exams.
- Initiates basic life support action when necessary.
- Provides patient education.
- Provides input for supply and equipment decisions, maintains control of inventory and supplies.
- Assumes responsibility for assigned area, reports equipment malfunction.
- Provides practical instruction for students and partners.
- Observes universal protocol, standard precautions, and appropriate patient identifiers.
- Applies principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic and mammographic procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
- Prepares schedules, obtains and reviews previous mammograms, makes follow-up calls, and performs other tasks as assigned.
- Completes forms and maintains records, logs, and reports of work performed in accordance with MQSA.
- Utilizes appropriate scripting, barriers and patient identifiers. Working knowledge of PACS.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Graduate of an accredited radiography program.
3 years experience as a Mammography Tech required.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSUREARRT Radiography registration required,
ARRT Mammography certification required
Bone Densitometry Certification
IEMA-DNS radiography accreditation required if working in Illinois
WI-DSPS radiographer license required if working in Wisconsin
Approved CPR or BLS certification required
