Full Job Description
Maintenance Manager

The Maintenance Manager oversees the day-to-day functions of mechanics, bus washers, utility workers and administrative staff members. Maintenance facilities typically operate on a three-shift basis to ensure that maintenance on equipment is completed; testes and inspections of products, services and process to evaluate quality or performance of that equipment is accomplished; and specifications are met to DOT, client or company standards. This position is based in Phoenix, AZ.

  • Competitive compensation package of minimum $112,000 - maximum $140,000/ annually

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervising Maintenance Staff: Hire, train, and evaluate technicians, ensuring adherence to safety and performance standards, and providing coaching and development opportunities. Investigate, provide information, make, and administer decisions concerning employee discipline in the maintenance department. Monitors absences/PTO/FMLA usage; verifies and authorizes time sheets for payroll purposes. Evaluates the performance of both new and current employees. Explains administrative policies and procedures to employees; administers Collective Bargaining Agreement provisions. Facilitates and schedules training of both new and current employees. Conducts daily safety/shift turnover meetings with both mechanics and the supervisor on duty. Works with facility maintenance to communicate issues relevant to a safe and pleasant union-based work environment.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Develop and implement a maintenance schedule, perform inspections, and ensure operational efficiency of mechanical, electrical, and automated systems. Make on-the-spot decisions regarding repairs, and, at times, make on-the-spot repairs as needed. Communicates with mechanics on diagnosis and procedural repairs while assisting with technical questions. Monitors tracking sheets generated by management to ensure repairs are completed promptly. Monitors the work of both internal employees and vendors for quality and quantity. Works with Parts personnel to obtain the correct replacement parts. Lists and schedules buses ready for PMIs and other work, and communicates this information with operations. Ensures work order closure at EOM.
  • Budget and Resource Management: Track maintenance expenses, manage spare parts inventory, forecast material needs, and optimize costs while maintaining high operational standards. Ensures work order closure at EOM as per RTA guidelines.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all maintenance activities comply with safety regulations, environmental standards, and organizational policies. Works with facility maintenance to communicate issues relevant to a safe and pleasant work environment. Addresses environmental concerns or issues that develop on the road in case of a vehicle failure. Ensure the cleanliness of the yard and facilities by walking the facility at the start and end of each shift. Communicate with management within and from other departments daily to ensure objectives are met.
  • Technical Support and Troubleshooting: Provide mechanical expertise, electrical and control systems, and coordinate with vendors or contractors for specialized repairs. Monitors the status of down/out-of-service equipment and provides a daily report to the COP. Collects oil samples and sends them for analysis, with follow-up on associated repairs and notification. Daily review of the RTA dashboard and subsequent follow-up on all abnormal issues.

  • 7 years+ experience in the repair and maintenance of all types of heavy-duty automotive and transit equipment
  • 3 years+ of supervisory experience
  • Broad understanding of all mechanical systems related to heavy-duty transportation vehicles
  • Familiarity with laws & regulations associated with the safe operation of maintenance facilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
  • Subject to a DOT drug testing and physical if applicable. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including cannabis, for any reason.

Physical Requirements:

The essential functions of this position require the ability to:
  • Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions-100% of the job is performed outside, work alone and in remote locations.
  • Sit for extended periods (up to 6-8 hours per day); frequently walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces
  • Push and pull objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally throughout the workday; lift material weighing up to
  • 50 lbs. with or without assistance; occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch to files or equipment stored at ground level
  • Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job; tolerate exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.
