Job Description

Maintenance Manager - Decatur, IL
ADM's Flagship Corn Wet Milling Facility

Position Summary
This position leads the strategy, talent, and day-to-day execution of the largest and most complex maintenance organization in ADM's corn wet milling network. As the Maintenance Manager for ADM's flagship Decatur facility - an approximately 650-person, 24/7 operation processing corn into value-added products - this leader owns safety, reliability, and cost performance for one of the company's most capital-intensive, highest-throughput sites, with approximately 250 ADM and contractor colleagues reporting through the organization. Given Decatur's scale and visibility, this role sets the standard other ADM maintenance organizations are benchmarked against, and the successful candidate should be viewed as a strong pipeline candidate for future Regional Maintenance, RCM, or
Plant Manager roles.
This is a senior leadership position that calls for a proven, high-caliber leader with a track record of building and running large, complex maintenance organizations - not simply executing an existing program. The ideal candidate has led maintenance or reliability functions at scale, has influenced peers and senior leaders across a multi-site network, and is comfortable operating from the shop floor to the corporate boardroom. They combine deep technical credibility in R&M systems, predictive/preventative programs, and RCM best practices with the strategic judgment to prioritize capital investment, the executive presence to represent Decatur to corporate and regulatory stakeholders, and the people leadership to build bench strength across multiple layers of supervision. They will spend significant time in the field mentoring, auditing practices, and coaching their leadership team, while also representing Decatur's maintenance function at the plant and corporate level.

Scope & Organizational Impact
  • Largest maintenance organization in the ADM network: ~650 total site colleagues, ~250 reporting through this role
  • Leads through a multi-layered leadership team (superintendents/supervisors), not solely through individual contributors
  • Owns and defends a multi-million dollar annual R&M budget and partners on long-range capital strategy for the complex
  • Serves as Decatur's senior maintenance voice in corporate, regional, and RCM Center of Excellence forums
  • Expected to set and export best practices as the benchmark facility for other ADM sites

Essential Job Functions
  • Actively ensure that all ADM employees, visitors, vendors, and contractors understand and align with ADM safety policies and procedures
  • Require safety and compliance with all state and federal regulations, and ADM policies
  • Work closely with compliance personnel to ensure continuous audit readiness in a PSM and Food Safety plant
  • Lead and continually improve a maintenance program that maintains assets efficiently to meet production and quality goals
  • Own the site's yearly R&M budget, including capital planning, monthly tracking/reporting, and cost-overage prevention
  • Build and develop a multi-layered leadership team capable of executing efficient maintenance planning and scheduling at scale
  • Guide the department toward a cohesive, positive climate that achieves organizational goals across a large, complex workforce
  • Strategically utilize RCM CoE resources and incorporate network standards and best practices
  • Uphold an effective training program for new and existing maintenance techs, including cross-functional training with operations
  • Apply Performance Excellence/Continuous Improvement tools to meet department and facility goals
  • Identify and prioritize maintenance improvement and capital projects for one of ADM's most capital-intensive sites
  • Provide mentorship to maintenance colleagues, engineers, and other ADM leaders to drive short- and long-term performance through KPIs and continuous improvement
  • Represent Decatur's maintenance function in corporate, regional, and RCM forums, and champion adoption of best practices across the network
  • Embrace an owner's mindset, managing costs and continuously focusing on efficiency improvement
  • Provide mentorship, accountability, and disciplinary support as necessary
  • Maintain a high degree of availability to a 24/7 operation

Required Skills
  • Strong commitment to safety
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through multiple layers of leadership ("leading leaders"), not just individual contributors
  • Executive presence and comfort engaging corporate, regulatory, and senior plant leadership
  • Knowledge of food safety requirements in a processing plant
  • Excellent leadership ability, including a vision for strategic direction, delegation, and leading others in work execution
  • Knowledge of multiple processes and unit operations in a full-scale production plant
  • Knowledge of PSM and Food Safety Standards is vital
  • Strategic capital and budget planning at a multi-million dollar scale
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Proven track record as a phenomenal teammate
  • High energy level and clear customer focus emphasis
  • Ability to prioritize workload across a large, complex organization
  • Makes decisions in a fair and professional manner

Required Education
  • B.S. in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Ag preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Advanced degree (MBA or MS) a plus, given the scope and strategic nature of this role
  • Leadership experience (in a union environment is a plus) where performance accountability and culture change is demonstrated and driven

Required Experience
  • 12-15+ years of progressive maintenance/reliability leadership experience, including experience leading through other leaders (supervisors/superintendents) in a large, complex, continuous-process facility
  • 7+ years in a senior maintenance or reliability leadership role at a large industrial or food/ag processing site
  • 5+ years of industrial maintenance in a continuous process environment preferred

Desired Experience
  • Prior maintenance or operations leadership experience at a flagship, largest-in-network, or otherwise highly complex facility - Corn Wet Mill experience strongly preferred
  • Track record of developing and promoting other leaders into expanded roles
  • Experience influencing standards or practices across a multi-site network
  • Experience with application of Continuous Improvement principles in a continuous production manufacturing environment
