Machinist 4 ($80,400 - $127,900)The Machinist will work on a team of engineers, designers, and scientists to develop solutions to challenging problems in national security. Personal accountability for safe operations and the safety of others is a top priority for this position. Your responsibilities will be centered on CAM programing and fabrication, but also include other general shop work such as cleaning, light maintenance, and minor administrative duties. Equipment in the shop includes CNC and manual mills, lathes, a wire EDM, a 5-axis mill, and hand tools. This equipment is subject to change as shop needs and mission requirements evolve.
The hazards associated with this work include, but are not limited to, pressure, electrical, mechanical, and chemical. Additionally, there are complex security considerations associated with the position.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: - 3 Years of experience machining custom fabrications from drawings
- Accredited Machinist Certificate qualification.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Experience with CAD and CAM software
- Work technical objectives of assignments.
- Work successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
- (may) have formal training or experience machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, and saws, and other industrial apparatus
Additional Job Requirements for the Machinist 4: In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level
- Accredited Journeyman Machinist qualification.
- 5+ years of experience machining custom fabrications from drawings
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Experience with CAD and CAM software
Training/Certifications: Accredited Machinist Certificate qualification and/or Accredited Journeyman Machinist qualification desired.
Education/Experience Machinist 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 4 year's related experience; OR, 6 year's prototype experience; OR, Journeyperson qualification program and 4 years of experience.
Education/Experience Machinist 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 6 years of experience; OR, 8 years prototype experience; OR, Journeyperson qualification program and 6 years of experience.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience with ultra-precision fabrication techniques.
- Experience with classified operations/material.
- Experience operating cranes or forklifts.
- Possess active security clearance.

Work Environment: Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
