Full Job Description
The M365 Engineer - Modern Workplace implements, administers, and supports business-focused Microsoft 365 services across SharePoint Online, Microsoft Viva, Power Platform, Microsoft Fabric, Azure services, and Copilot. This role partners with business and technical teams to deliver secure, reliable, well-governed collaboration, automation, analytics, and AI-enabled workplace solutions. The engineer serves as an escalation point for complex incidents and service requests, supports platform governance and adoption, and maintains documentation, standards, and automation to improve operational efficiency. This position offers a hybrid work option. Nelnet values flexibility and understands the importance of work-life integration. Our hybrid work environment allows associates within 30 miles of an office to work remotely for part of the week, while also fostering collaboration and team connection through in-office presence. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Modern Workplace Platform Administration & Governance: Administer and support SharePoint Online, Microsoft Viva, Power Platform, Microsoft Fabric, Azure services, and Copilot capabilities with an emphasis on governance, lifecycle management, reliability, and service health. SharePoint Online & Content Collaboration: Support collaboration sites, content management, permissions, site architecture, document management, adoption, and information governance practices across SharePoint Online and related Microsoft 365 workloads. Business Enablement & Low-Code Solutions: Partner with business stakeholders to identify automation, workflow, reporting, and digital transformation opportunities using Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Copilot Studio, and related platform capabilities. Microsoft Fabric & Analytics Support: Support Fabric and Power BI administration activities that enable data integration, dataflows, reporting, business intelligence, and analytics use cases in alignment with organizational governance standards. Azure Services Management: Administer Azure services that support Modern Workplace solutions, including subscriptions, resource groups, storage accounts, serverless services, application integrations, automation, and operational governance outside of Entra ID administration. Copilot Readiness & Adoption: Support Copilot for Microsoft 365 readiness, governance, adoption, communication, end-user enablement, and related operational processes. Integration & Automation: Automate administrative and operational tasks using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, Power Platform automation, Azure Automation, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, and other scripting or integration technologies as appropriate. Security, Compliance & Change Management: Partner with security, compliance, infrastructure, networking, and service desk teams to maintain a secure, stable, and compliant environment while supporting change management, release planning, DLP, retention, access controls, and platform governance activities. Escalation, Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Serve as an escalation point for complex Microsoft 365 incidents and service requests; develop and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, standards, operational procedures, training materials, and adoption resources; and mentor or provide knowledge transfer to support staff as needed. Continuous Improvement & Microsoft Roadmap: Monitor platform health, licensing, service advisories, Message Center updates, Azure and Microsoft 365 roadmap changes, emerging AI and collaboration capabilities, and recommend improvements that strengthen reliability, security, user experience, and operational efficiency. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, related field, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. EXPERIENCE: - 3+ years of hands-on experience administering Microsoft 365 in an enterprise environment. - Experience administering and governing SharePoint Online and related collaboration workloads. - Experience with Microsoft Viva, Power Platform, Power BI, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Fabric, or similar business solution platforms. - Experience supporting Microsoft Azure services related to Modern Workplace solutions, including platform governance and application integrations. - Experience supporting Copilot for Microsoft 365 readiness, adoption, governance, or enablement activities. - Experience with PowerShell, Microsoft Graph API, Power Platform automation, Azure Automation, Logic Apps, REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, or similar scripting and automation technologies. - Familiarity with security and compliance concepts such as MFA, Conditional Access, DLP, retention policies, and information governance. - Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to work independently on complex incidents, problems, and service requests. COMPETENCIES - SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES: - Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to business and technical audiences. - Business acumen and the ability to translate business needs into feasible Microsoft 365, Azure, automation, reporting, and collaboration solutions. - Self-directed, highly motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic enterprise environment. - Ability to quickly learn new Microsoft technologies, business processes, and platform capabilities. - Ability to partner effectively with security, compliance, networking, infrastructure, service desk, business units, and vendor partners. - Knowledge of Microsoft 365 governance, service health management, operational documentation, and continuous improvement practices. - Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance. - Knowledge in the area of NIST compliance strongly desired. Compensation for this position is $75,000-$120,000 annually, depending on experience.
